Raw Fury: The Art of Mike Zeck

Mike Zeck is the subject of a retrospective at the Cartoon Museum in San Francisco that will run from April 10th to August 14th!

This exhibition features the most comprehensive collection of the fan-favorite artist’s most iconic artwork ever assembled, including The Punisher, G.I. Joe, The Amazing Spider-Man, Marvel Superheroes Secret Wars, and Captain America. A full-color exhibition catalog will be published in conjunction with the exhibition, featuring more than 50 pieces of original artwork, an introduction by exhibition curator Charles Costas, and commentary from Zeck himself.

David “Brohawk” Williams Takes on Rambo

I’ve been a fan of David “Brohawk” Williams’ art from the moment I first laid eyes on it.  Most folks become fans that quickly because Brohawk is THAT great.

When I had a chance to meet David at HeroesCon in 2012, I was thrilled when he agreed to do a Stallone Rambo sketch for me.  Awesome, isn’t it?  And that’s just from a photo.  The actual art is too big for my scanner!

Dave Wachter and Jimmy Bobo

Dave Wachter is back and he brought his take on Sly from the Bullet to the Head. I met Dave a few years ago and became an instant fan. I wasn’t the only one to discover Dave’s fantastic sketches! How can you not like a great guy who is a terrific artist?

At HeroesCon this year I asked Dave to draw Sly from his first major movie, the Lords of Flatbush and another piece of Sly from his latest film, Bullet to the Head.  Last week, you saw Dave’s take on Sly as Stanley Kowalski, so this week we have Sly as Jimmy Bobo.

You can see more of Dave’s art at his site. – Craig

Dave Wachter & Stanley Kowalski from “Lords of Flatbush”

Dave Wachter returns with his take on Sly from the Lords of Flatbush. I met Dave a few years ago and became an instant fan. I wasn’t the only one to discover Dave’s fantastic sketches! How can you not like a great guy who is a terrific artist?

At HeroesCon this year I asked Dave to do Sly from his first major movie, the Lords of Flatbush and another piece of Sly from his latest film, Bullet to the Head. Next week, you’ll see Dave’s take on Sly as Jimmy Bobo.

Until then, you can see more of Dave’s art at his site. – Craig

10 Non-Superhero Comic Series That Would Make Great TV Shows

Earlier this week, Carl Jansson at WhatCulture posted his choices for 10 Non-Superhero Comic Series That Would Make Great TV Shows.  Here are Carl’s Choices and my thoughts…

10. Drafted by Mark Powers and Chris Lie
My thoughts: This could work… but so much would depend on the budget for special effects. It wouldn’t be my first choice and it wasn’t Jansson’s either.

09. DMZ by Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli
My thoughts: This series has run for years and with recent news events, is more relevant than ever.  I’d tune in.

08.  Queen & Country by Greg Rucka and various artists
My thoughts: This has a lot of potential.  My biggest worry would there be an audience for a British spy that wasn’t 007.

07.  Criminal Macabre by Steve Niles and various artists
My thoughts: If I had the power to get a show made, I’d be all over this one.  Steve Niles has created a world that would be fun to visit.

06.  100 Bullets by Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso
My thoughts: This would be my first choice to bring to tv.  It’s a crime drama that has the potential to breakout on the level of The Sopranos.  Man, I wish someone would make this!

05.  Northlanders by Brian Wood and various artists
My thoughts: With the popularity of Game of Thrones and Vikings, this might be seen as an effort to cash in, and maybe it would be… but if it produces a great tv show, who cares?

04.  Chew by John Layman and Rob Guillory
My thoughts: I think the premise (“Tony Chu is Cibopathic, which means he gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats. It also means he’s a hell of a detective, as long as he doesn’t mind nibbling on the corpse of a murder victim to figure out whodunit, and why.”)  would turn people off before they tried the first episode.

03.  Skinwalker by Nunzio DeFilippis & Christina Weir (writers) and Brian Hurtt & Arthur Dela Cruz (artists)
My thoughts: This one could work.  I’d tune in, but I wonder if this, like Chew, would turn people off before they even gave it a shot.

02.  Gotham Central by Various
My thoughts: I’d like to think this would work.  I just wonder if the viewing public would want Batman more than he’d be seen.

01.  Damage Control by Various
My thoughts: Do we really want a tv series about a group that has to clean up the mess left by battles between superheroes and villains?  Yeah, I didn’t think so either.

Jansson’s article got me thinking.  So this week, I’ll post my choices for non-superhero comics that should get a shot as a tv series.

50 Oldest Action Stars – Who Still Has It?

Recently Total Film posted a piece titled the 50 Oldest Actions Heroes.  So, let’s take a look and see who still has it (from youngest to oldest)…

50 – Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock is the youngest on the list and potentially the one with the most potential of reaching the levels achieved by Stallone and Schwarzenegger.  In order to do that though, Johnson is going to have to create a character that becomes iconic in popular culture.

49 – Terry Crews.  I always enjoy his screen presence, but would like to see him star in something gritty.

48 – Will Smith.  Action Star?  Really?  He could be, but I think of him more as a movie star.

47 – Daniel Craig.  He’s great as Bond and I’d be content to see him reprise the role several more times.

46 – Jason Statham.  Loved him in The Transporter films and of course, The Expendable movies.  He’s always a welcome presence, but it sure seems like he’s making a lot of movies the last few years.

45 – Vin Diesel.  One of my favorite action stars.  Hopefully his return to Riddick will be awesome.  I’m always interested to see what Diesel will do next.

44 – Robert Downey, Jr.  Does playing Iron Man qualify you to be considered an action star?  Like Will Smith, I think of Downey as a movie star.

43 – Clive Owen.  I like Owen.  (Now, I can’t get the Throw Mama from the Train voice out of my head so we will move on…)

42 – Ray Stevenson.  Yeah, a great bad guy.  Seems legitimately tough and scary.

41 – Steve Austin.  Except for The Expendables, Austin is usually in lower budget action movies.  I like the guy.  Can you imagine him in a tv series on FX like The Shield or Sons of Anarchy?  Break out.

40 – Nick CageThe Rock.  Con Air.  Let’s leave it at that.

39 – Jet Li.  Awesome fighter.  Fun to see a different side of him in The Expendables.

38 – Tom Cruise.  Seems like Cruise is getting a resurgence of late.  Oh, and while we’re on the subject of Tom Cruise, shouldn’t he have been the star to play Jim West when the remake of The Wild, Wild West was made?

37 – Wesley Snipes.  Loved him as Blade.  Hope he is in Expendables 3.

36 – Laurence Fishburn.  Perfect as Neo.  I was surprised he is only 51.  He’s been around forever.  Of course he was just a teenager in Apocalypse Now.

35 – Jean-Claude Van Damme.  My favorite JCVD movies: Cyborg, Hard Target and The Expendables 2.

34 – Antonio Banderas.  Most remember him from Desperado and Zorro.  Check out: Assassins, The Big Bang (love it!), The 13th Warrior (love it) and Haywire.

33 – Ving Rhames.  Big Ving.  Always a welcome sight on the movie screen.

32 – Sean Bean.  Haven’t seen him in a lot, but like what I’ve seen.

31 – Bruce Campbell.  King of the B-movies and comic fans everywhere.

30 – Dolph Lundgren.  He was perfect as Drago in Rocky IV and Gunner in The Expendables.

29 – Christopher Lambert.  I thought he was older.  Loved him in Highlander (the first – and there should have only been one).

28 – Eric Roberts. Really? Action star?

27 – Michael Biehn. Always thought he’d be a bigger break out star.

26 – Chow Yun-Fat.  See comments for Michael Biehn.

25 – Mel Gibson.  Really, really good at making action movies.  Loved him in most of the roles he starred in and most of the films he’s directed.  His personal life has been such a mess it’s impacted his status in Hollywood.  Hopefully, he’ll get back on track and start making great movies again – even if it’s only directing.

24 – Bruce Willis.  Gotta love Willis.  Yippee Ki-Yay, indeed.

23 – Denzel Washington.  Training Day.  ‘nuff said.

22 – Jackie Chan.  So entertaining.

21 – John Travolta.  Action star?

20 – John Malkovich.  Movie star.  Crazy villain.  Action star?

19 – Steven Seagal.  Former action star.  Now full time crazy celebrity.

18 – Liam Neeson.  Came late to the action movie arena, but brought his “A” game.  Action star!

17 – Kurt Russell.  Wish we saw more from Kurt Russell.  How about one more outing as Snake Plissken?

16 – Jean RenoThe Professional aka Leon.

15 – Samuel L. Jackson.  Action star.  Movie star.  Whatever Mr. Jackson wants.

14 – Arnold Schwarzenegger.  One time co-king of action stars.  His most recent outing in The Last Stand barely made the top 10 in its opening week.  I was shocked.

13 – Carl Weathers.  I always expected bigger and better from Carl Weathers.  Somebody use this guy!  (Anybody remember his tv series, Fortune Dane?  I do and I liked it.)

12 – Danny Glover.  Does co-starring in the Lethal Weapon series make you an action star?

11 – Sylvester Stallone.  Still Rockying (pun intended) it.

10 – Danny Trejo.  Who doesn’t love to see Danny Trejo on the screen?

09 – Gary Busey.  Action star?

08 – Harrison Ford.  Movie star who has made some very good action films.  Hard to believe he’s 70.

07 – Nick Nolte. Movie star who also made some good action films.

06 – Chuck Norris.  Action star.  Appeared on screen with Bruce Lee and Stallone. You know how I feel about that.

05 – Ian McKellen.  Action star?

04 – Burt Reynolds.  Before Stallone. Before SchwarzeneggerBurt Reynolds was the king.  Just thinking about it makes me want to go watch Sharkey’s Machine again.

03 – Sean ConneryConnery was always James Bond cool.

02 – Clint Eastwood.  An American Icon. A true action star.  Still going strong at 82.

01 – Christopher Lee.  Never a huge fan, but what an impressive resume.

Just one last comment… why wasn’t Mickey Rourke on this list?

Comic Book Easter Eggs

The image above is an enlargement of a panel from Aliens/Predators: The Deadliest of the Species #5, by Chris Claremont [writer] and Eduardo Barreto [artist].  It’s a shot of a Predator’s trophy wall.  It’s obvious at this size that the trophies consist of an alien, Wolverine’s hand, Batman’s head, and the heads of other heroes.  Writers and artists regularly throw in little extras, or Easter Eggs, for observant readers.

I love stuff like this.

Falling Skies, Raising Expectations

Have you seen this trailer for Falling Skies?  So, what’d you think?  Although I’m not sold from just seeing the preview, I do like the concept…

FALLING SKIES opens in the chaotic aftermath of an alien attack that has left most of the world completely incapacitated. In the six months since the initial invasion, the few survivors have banded together outside major cities to begin the difficult task of fighting back. Each day is a test of survival as citizen soldiers work to protect the people in their care while also engaging in an insurgency campaign against the occupying alien force…

… and the people involved…

FALLING SKIES is executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, along with DreamWorks Television heads Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank, Graham Yost (Justified, The Pacific) and screenwriter Robert Rodat. Rodat, who earned an Oscar® nomination for his screenplay for Saving Private Ryan, wrote the pilot from an idea he co-conceived with Spielberg. Mark Verheiden (Heroes, Battlestar Galactica) and Greg Beeman (Heroes, Smallville) are co-executive producers. The pilot was directed by Carl Franklin (One False Move, Out of Time)…

The series stars: Noah Wyle, Moon Bloodgood, Drew Roy, and Colin Cunningham.
