Doug Dabbs Knows Jack

Doug Dabbs makes his first, but not last, appearance in our Stallone Sketch Gallery. I first met Doug in 2011 at Heroes Con. I was heading out from the show and saw his art. If there had been time, I’d have got a sketch on the spot.

I told Doug I would get a piece from him in 2012 and I did. Two in fact. This piece is Doug’s take on Sly as an older, but still tough, Jack Carter. He also did an equally cool riff on Barney Ross from The Expendables. I’ll post it soon. – Craig

The Black Beetle: Action! Thrills! Suspense!

Remember back in August when it was announced that the first mini-series to feature Franco Francavilla’s Black Beetle was going to debut in January?  

Good.

Now is the time to pre-order issues one and two.  If you click over to Franco’s site, you can get a look at the covers for the first two issues as well as plot summaries.

If the Black Beetle looks/sounds like something you’d like, please consider pre-ordering.  Franco is a great guy and his Black Beetle stories are a lot of fun!

 

“LA Noir” is Coming to TNT

LA Noir is an original series from TNT that has a lot of potential.  Frank [The Walking Dead; Shawshank Redemption; The Mist] Darabont not only serves as Executive Producer, but also wrote and directed the pilot. 

Jon (The Walking Dead)  Bernthal headlines as ex-marine/LA cop, Joe Teague in an era of mobsters and corrupt cops.  LA Noir is based on John Buntin’s book of the same name. Coming Soon has more info about the series.     

 

Arnold Toughest Member of Lollipop Guild

That’s the first shot of Arnold Schwarzenegger in character for the crime-action-drama, Ten, that’s now in production.  According to ComingSoon: 

  • The film follows an elite DEA task force that deals with the world’s deadliest drug cartels. Specializing in complex mobile operations, the team executes a tactical raid on a cartel safe house. What looks to be a typical raid turns out to be an elaborate theft operation, pre-planned by the DEA squad. After hiding millions in stolen cash, the team believes their secret is safe – until someone begins assassinating them one by one. 

Arnold looks to be in fine form and he’s still got that Terminator-stare, but if you ask me, that Lollipop-Guild haircut has got to go.


Mike Hammer Making a Comeback!

Earlier this week, Deadline.com posted that Warner Bros. had picked up the rights to Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer.  Although it hasn’t been decided whether Hammer will be turned loose in a modern day setting or the film will be a period piece, I think that either way we’re in for a potentially fun movie. 

The real question is, who to play Mike Hammer?  If they’re not going with an unknown, then I’d suggest Karl Urban.  I’ll be interested to see who others (especially Chris Mills) would have step into the role.  Your thoughts? 

Oh, and while we’re making suggestions, might I suggest that Armand Assante’s outing as Mike Hammer in I, the Jury be brought out on dvd?

Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher Could Be a Stretch

That’s the latest poster for Jack Reacher starring Tom Cruise.  Fans of Lee Child’s novels have been pretty vocal that Cruise is not right for the role of the 6′ 5″ tough guy.  I’d have to agree.  Still, I’ll judge the movie based on how it plays out rather than Cruise’s height [or lack of]. 

I don’t really care for this poster.  This trailer isn’t much better, although I do enjoy it from the point that Cruise steps out of the moving car right before the police arrive.

Who Knows? Matt Wagner Knows!

Matt Wagner has signed on to write The Shadow: Year One for Dynamite Comics.  Although The Shadow has been around for the better part of a century appearing in pulps, comics, and movies, his origin has been sketchy at best.  Wagner who is a fan of the character plans to change that. 

  • “THE SHADOW has long been one of my absolute favorite established characters and I’m thrilled to finally get the chance to contribute to his continuing adventures,” says Matt Wagner.  ”I’m getting to help define The Shadow’s mysterious origins in a Year One story arc!  For all his published history in both the pulps and comics, as well as his radio adventures, there’s surprisingly no depiction of his very first adventures as the dark-clad Master of Men.  This series will explore the events that first drew Kent Allard/Lamont Cranston back to the States, how he began to assemble his vast network of agents and how he first adopted the famous black hat and cloak as his alter-ego’s disguise-secrets that, up until now…only The Shadow knew!”

“The Goon” Movie… Let’s Kickstart This Sucker!

Ten years ago I wrote a post talking about an awesome new comic series called The Goon.  For more than a decade,  Eric Powell [who created, writes and draws] The Goon has continued to produce a comic loved by fans of all ages.

So it was no surprise when, four years ago, The Goon was optioned to become a feature film. 

About a year later we got to see a couple of production images showing how The Goon movie would look. 

Two years ago we were treated to a movie poster for The Goon which was listed as “Coming Soon to a Theater Near You.” 

A year ago we got to glimpse test footage from The Goon.   Each step of the way, the hope for an actual full length feature length Goon film seemed closer to becoming a reality.  Unfortunately, even with David [Se7en] Fincher on board, the financing wasn’t there.

Now thanks to Kickstarter, all that can change.  I’m in.  Will you join me?  The Goon movie… Let’s Kickstart this sucker!
