In his newsletter that came out yesterday, Ed Brubaker shared the cover of the third book in his and Sean Phillips’ Reckless series.  Titled Destroy All Monsters, it features their character Ethan Reckless.  Brubaker also announced:

Our original plan was to do the first three books in the series, then take a break and do something else and then come back for more Reckless adventures, but then I had ideas for two more… so we’ll be doing five of these in a row unless something goes wrong.

Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips Get “Reckless”

This is the cover to Reckless, the first of three new graphic novels coming from Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips through Image Comics.  Each of the graphic novels will be a complete separate standalone crime story.  Here’s how Brubaker describes Reckless

Meet Ethan Reckless: Your trouble is his business, for a price.

A former student radical, with the scars to prove it, Ethan is one part repo man, one part private eye, and one part wrecking ball. But when a fugitive from his Weather Underground days reaches out for help, Ethan will have to face the only thing he really fears… his own past.

It’s sex, drugs, and murder in early ‘80s Los Angeles, as Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips launch their first graphic novel series with an electrifying new take on the paperback pulp hero.

Brubaker goes on to say that Reckless will be 144 pages, premiere in December with the second book scheduled for April 2021. Again, each of these books will be a completely standalone graphic novel.  Man, this hits a bunch of my crime fiction sweet spots.

If you subscribe to Brubaker’s free newsletter you are able to see three pages from Reckless and they look wicked.  If you don’t subscribe, you’ll definitely want to check out The Hollywood Reporter’s coverage: Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips to Launch Graphic Novel Series ‘Reckless‘.

Pulp by Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips

Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips are coming back strong with a new graphic novel titled Pulp.

Max Winters, a pulp writer in 1930s New York, finds himself drawn into a story not unlike the tales he churns out at 5 cents a word – tales of a wild west outlaw dispensing justice with a six-gun. But will Max be able to do the same, when pursued by bank robbers, Nazi spies, and enemies from his past?

One part thriller, one part meditation on a life of violence, PULP is unlike anything the award-winning team of BRUBAKER and PHILLIPS have ever done. A celebration of pulp fiction, set in a world on the brink. And another must-have hardback from one of comics most-acclaimed teams.

Pulp premieres May 26, 2020.  I cannot wait.

Kyle Baker Career-Spanning Interview

Steve Morris at Comics Alliance recently conducted a career-spanning that is worth a look.  Here are a couple of quotes from Baker for a taste…

“I think that it’s never wise to measure one’s worth by the opinions of strangers. I’m just trying to create the work I enjoy…

“When I work, I do the best job I can according to my skill level at the time. I’m always studying, and looking to learn how to write and draw better, and that’s what’s important to me…

“If I am listening to a street-corner trumpet player, and I enjoy it, why should it matter that he is not performing for thousands?…

Some suggestions of Kyle Baker‘s work that I highly recommend…

Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips – A Retrospective!

Long time readers know that I am a huge fan of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips comic stories.  Perhaps David Harper summarizes my feelings best when he describes his admiration for Brubaker and Phillips by saying they are…

the finest and most consistent creative partnership in modern comics. When you hear Brubaker and Phillips are working on something, the question isn’t “will I buy it?”, it’s “when can I buy it?” They’re the type of team where your pull list simply has a “Brubaker/Phillips all” item on it. That’s rarefied air, at least for me.

Harper goes on to create an excellent overview of Brubaker and Phillips work in This Noir Life: A Retrospective of the Brubaker/Phillips Partnership at sktched.com.
