Ken Meyer, Jr. Presents Steranko, Ditko, Black, Greim and Much More!

Ken Meyer, Jr. presents a monthly column called Ink Stains. In the column Ken (who is an amazing artist) posts a fanzine from his collection.  Here’s Ken…

I have a collection of over 200 fanzines from the 60’s-80’s that I plan to scan and talk about, one at a time. I hope to have some of the participants answer a few questions. Many of those participants are established comics professionals now, while some have gone on to other things. I will show a few snippets from each zine and give you a link to download a pdf of the whole thing, which I hope all of you will do!

In Ink Stains 109, Ken shares with us Comic Crusader #13 which is amazing considering the talent this fanzine contains.  Comic Crusader #13 features a cover by Jim Steranko (!), an illo by Steranko inked by Bill Black, a 19 page story written & illustrated by Marty Greim, a Bill Black full page illo (plus spot illos  by Wild Bill), an 8 page Mr. A story written an illustrated by Steve Ditko (!), a Gil Kane back cover and much more!  What a classic fanzine.

As always, thanks to Ken for bringing back great memories of fandom!

Steranko’s Concept Art for “Bram Stoker’s Dracula”

What we’re looking at above is extremely rare concept paintings for Bram Stoker’s Dracula by Jim Steranko.  I’d love to see a book of Steranko’s movie concept art (Dracula, Raiders, etc.), but then again, who wouldn’t?

When Jim Steranko Re-Cast Nick Fury and the Agents of S.H.I.E.LD.

Brian Cronin’s When Jim Steranko Re-Cast Nick Fury and the Agents of S.H.I.E.LD. at CBR.com is well worth a read.

But before you click over, let’s have a little fun.

Cronin contends that Steranko based his version of Nick Fury on an actor famous for his athleticism and rugged good looks.  After reading the article, I agree!

As a bonus, Cronin also suggests that the blonde guy with the big smile in the lower right on the cover above is another famous actor from the same time period.  And, again I think that he’s right.

Do you have any ideas who those two actors could be?

Steranko Prelim for Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Here’s something you don’t see everyday.  It is a vintage Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD prelim by Steranko.

Can you believe it was rejected?  It was supposed to be the cover to the first issue.

Truth be told, I like the published cover of the first issue better, but Steranko used a modified version of the art above for the cover of issue 5 and it was accepted.

These two Steranko pieces appeared with other art by Steranko, Frank Frazetta, Berni Wrightson, Michael Kaluta, Steve Hickman, Kenneth Smith and others in Spa Fon 5 (Ink Stains #100).

As always, thanks to Ken for bringing back great memories of fandom!

For Ink Stains 71, Ken took a look at Comic Crusader 5 and 6 from 1969 from Editor and Publisher: Martin L. Greim.

Comic Crusader 5 and 6 feature –

  • Covers by Steranko
  • Lots of fan art and articles
  • Comic story by Martin Greim
  • Early art by Dennis Fugitake
  • Steve Ditko’s Mr. A comic story
  • …and more!

The Steranko pieces make these issues worthy for me even if as Ken points out, it appears that someone else (Greim?) inked the cover to #5.

Thanks to Ken Meyer, Jr. for making these available!
