“Daybreakers”
Even though this poster for “Daybreakers” brings up too much of a “Matrix” feel, I still really want to see the movie, based mostly on this.

Otis Frampton is an extremely talented artist who loves drawing for his fans. Every Sunday [okay, ALMOST, every Sunday], Otis has a live UStream broadcast that he calls the 7×7 Sunday. Lucky fans can get a headsketch of ANY character drawn live by Otis on a 7X7 inch bristol board for 7 bucks postage paid. It’s the best deal going.
I’ve been lucky enough to get four pieces from Otis and the Rambo shown above is my first. I’ll be showing the rest in the coming weeks. In the mean time, check out Otis’ Gallery. Most likely, after seeing more of his work, I’ll be competing against you in Otis’ next 7×7 Sunday.
Here’s a survey that I took part in via my Facebook page. Since I’m a Tarantino fan [especially his early work], I thought it’d be interesting to see which character the survey paired me up with. Jules from “Pulp Fiction” is one of the coolest characters in Tarantino’s universe, so no complaints there. While I don’t think that I’m brutal or dangerous, I do have a “deep-seated sense of justice and righteousness” and a “strong moral code”. I’d like to think that I learn from my mistakes, and so far in life everything does seems to happen for a reason.
Yeah, I have no problems being matched up with Jules. I wonder if anyone does the survey and finds out that he/she matches up with “The Gimp“?
Dick Giordano, the comics legend is back! During his fifty plus years in the biz he’s done everything from ink all the greats (including himself) to serve as Editor-in-Chief of DC Comics, to co-founding his own comic company.
I recently had the good fortune to pick up six model sheet headsketches of Sly that Mr. Giodano did before starting work on DC Comics adaptation of “Demolition Man”. This is the fourth.
I’ve been singing the praises of Dennis Lehanne’s novel, Shutter Island for years. Publisher’s Weekly said it best: Shutter Island “carries an ending so shocking yet so faithful to what has come before, that it will go down as one of the most aesthetically right resolutions ever written.”
With Martin Scorsese directing a cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, and Ben Kingsley, each step closer to the premiere has me thinking that the movie will live up to the book’s excellence. This new trailer is even more evidence that we’re going to be in for a great couple of hours.
I really like this trailer for “The Crazies”. This is one remake that could be better than the original.
Empire Magazine has posted up a larger version of the photo above as well as a teaser of a longer interview with Sly about “The Expendables” that will appear in the next issue.
That’s the poster for the remake of George Romero’s “The Crazies”. While I’m a HUGE fan of Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead”, I felt that “The Crazies” wasn’t in the same league. The idea did have a lot of potential though, so I’m hoping that the remake will be even better. As for the poster, it ain’t bad. Let’s hope we can say the same thing about the movie.
Bill Marimon provides his take on Sly as Jack Carter. I’ve known Bill aka “The Raytrix” for years. He’s humble, funny, and a talented artist. Bill showed up on Saturday at Mini-MegaCon. He wasn’t set up as a guest, but I was able to persuade him to do a couple of Stallone sketches. This is the first. I’ll post the second soon. In the mean time check out Bill’s home on the web. There’s plenty there to hold you over.
Here’s the latest trailer for “The Book of Eli”. I want to see this movie NOW.
I’ve been a fan of Jeff Wamester’s art since I first laid eyes on it. We exchanged a few e-mails and I’d picked up a copy of sketchbook, but we’d never met. You can imagine my surprise to discover that he was going to be a guest at Heroes Con this year. I was fortunate enough to get on his sketch list and he came up with the very cool take on Deke DaSilva from “Nighthawks”.
You can see more of Jeff’s work at his site, Deviant Art, WMD: The Saga, and hopefully again here at the SZ!
Patrick Swayze died yesterday, after a 20 month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was just 57 years old.
I first remember seeing Patrick Swayzee in “The Outsiders” based on the classic S.E. Hinton novel. Later that same year he appeared in “Uncommon Valor.” But it was in “Red Dawn” that I really took notice of Patrick’s work. He was excellent as the leader of the young rebels fighting against a Soviet invasion. Patrick’s next big hit was “Dirty Dancing” and it propelled him to superstar status. Patrick went on to star in such films as “Road House”, “Ghost”, and my personal favorite, “Point Break”. I also have to mention his appearance on Saturday Night Live and the classic sketch with Chris Farley.
Patrick Swayzee was a dancer [“Chicago” and “Guys and Dolls”], an actor [nominated for three Golden Globe awards], a composer and singer [he co-wrote and sang “She’s Like the Wind” from “Dirty Dancing”], and even People’s Sexiest Man of the Year. But was his role as a husband [married for 34 years to Lisa Niemi], humanitarian and conservationist that he would probably most want to be remembered.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and fans.

What are the odds that on 09.09.09 that I’d post about a movie called Plan 9? Surprisingly, I’m not talking about Ed Wood’s cult classic Plan 9 from Outer Space.
Although some have called Plan 9 from Outer Space the worst movie ever made, I’m more in the camp of it’s so bad, it’s good. Anyone that says Plan 9 from Outer Space [written and directed by Ed Wood, starring Bela Lugosi in his last role, Tor Johnson and Vampira] is the worst ever made must not have seen Highlander 2 or Seven Pounds or anything starring Carrot Top.
Anyway… if I’m not talking about Plan 9 from Outer Space what am I talking about?
I’m glad you asked.
Apparently there is a reboot of the original Plan 9 from Outer Space in the works. No, I’m not kidding. Check out this trailer for Plan 9 and then pop back.
So what did you think? Me? Actually, I kind of liked it. Well, up until that fireball came out of the sky and hovered over the little girl. It was cool how they had Criswell’s opening playing on the radio as the zombies were attacking everyone. I’m thinking the remake could work as a low budget drive-in type movie.
Here’s a link to the Plan 9 website. This will be one to keep an eye on.
Mike Torrance is an artist who does it all — he pencils, inks and colors. Mike has been running a regular contest at Retro Cowboy Productions and his Deviant Art site. Each week he posts a subject and the first one to make request which fits the theme is the winner! I was one of two lucky winners for “Detective Week.”
Mike is available for commissions and his prices are very reasonable. Check him out.
