Friday night I watched my dvd extras for “The Mist” and was surprised to see Eric “The Goon” Powell on set with Frank Darabont. I’ve been an Eric Powell fan for years. So has Frank Darabont. In fact, Eric Powell did one of my favorite Stallone pieces [thanks again, John Higashi!].
Eric’s work on his creation, The Goon is required reading for all comic fans. And since we’re speaking of The Goon [okay, technically we’re not speaking and I am writing, but…} did you know that Eric has created an issue of The Goon without word balloons? The entire comic is made up of silent panels or just shots with thought balloons. The story involves the Goon, a stolen necklace, a fem fatale and a crazy killer… oh, and no word balloons. The Goon Vs. Dethklok
The one genre of music that I’m not much into is metal. That might mean that I’ll get a bit more joy out of seeing Eric Powell’s The Goon kick a bit of metalhead butt in the one-shot called, appropriately enough, “The Goon Vs. The Goon Lookin’ Good
It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost a year since it was announced that Eric Powell’s The Goon had been optioned by David [Se7en] Fincher for an antimated 3D feature. Harry, at AICN, posted a first look at what we can expect with two huge images that you can see here.
Free Look @ The Goon
I‘ve been following Eric Powell’s “The Goon” since his self-publishing days. Although it’s been eight years and Eric has moved into the big leagues with Dark Horse publishing “The Goon,” it’s as good as ever. And I’m not the only one who feels that way. This year Eric picked up two Eisner Awards [Best Painter and Best Humor Writer/Artist].

Goon Optioned
I’ve been an Eric Powell fan for years. His Goon is one of my favorite comics currently published. [I’d have said that even if Eric didn’t draw one of my all-time favorite Stallone pieces!]Eric recently announced on his website that David [Se7en] Fincher has teamed with Blur Studio and optioned the rights to the Goon for a CG animated feature. Dark Horse Entertainment, the publisher of the Goon will also be involved.
This is great news for Eric and Goon fans everywhere.
Powell and Oeming on The Goon!
I’ve been singing the praises of Eric Powell’s The Goon for more than a couple of years now. If you like great art, comic books, monsters, mobsters, zombies, witches and lots of [sometimes sick] humor, then you ought to give this book a try.It just keeps getting better and better.
Issue 16 is on the stands now. Of course it features the writing and art of Eric Powell and is a great jumping on point for those who’ve never read The Goon. Here’s a full look at the banner from the top of this point. Purty, ain’t it.
As an added bonus, Michael Avon Oeming provides the art for a Goon short adventure written by Tom Sniegoski. Frankie and the Goon decide to rescue a baby held for ransom by a horde of zombies!
I aboslutely love Oeming‘s art for this. Here’s a shot of Frankie and the Goon. Ya gotta love it. Here’s a reaction shot that is priceless. Of course you’d understand why I like it so much if you read the story.

The Creature from the Black Lagoon is Back!
As many of you know, I’m a big fan of monster movies. Especially the classic monsters… Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wolfman, and of course, The Creature from the Black Lagoon.
So you can imagine my reaction when I found out that a new series of original novels based on these characters was coming out later this year. You can read about The Creature from the Black Lagoon‘s novel HERE.

Get Your Goon On!
Without a doubt one of the most enjoyable comics going today is Eric Powell‘s The Goon. Dark Horse says The Goon “is a hilarious blend of pulpy horror and slapstick comedy following the ongoing misadventures of the man they call the Goon and his spastic sidekick Franky as they battle the legions of the undead!” Yeah, that pretty much sums it up!
I’ve been buying and loving the Goon since it was a little self-published comic. Now that it’s one of the most popular comics going today, I’m still pumping it up. Although I’ve posted this link before, here it is again in case you missed it… read The Goon #1 for free by clicking HERE.

Goon or Bust
I’ve been a fan of Eric Powell and his creation “The Goon” since Eric first started self-publishing it a few years ago.
I talked it up as each issue came out… and again when Eric put out each Goon trade paperback… and again when Dark Horse picked up the series. Well, I’m talking it up again since Dark Horse is providing a
free on-line preview of The Goon! Check it out, and if you’ve never picked up an issue, you’ll see what you’ve been missing [and what I’ve been yapping about all these years]!And by the way, isn’t that the coolest Goon bust?
BB2, 28 Days & The Goon

I didn’t care much for “Bad Boys” but I really, really enjoyed “Bad Boys II.” Will Smith and Martin Lawrence have that rare screen chemistry that makes you enjoy just watching them interact. Add a script that is pedal-to-the-floor action with a good mix of humor, then throw in director Michael Bay and you have two and a half hours of fun. I”m not the only one who feels this way… BB2 opened at #1 this weekend! This movie gets a big thumbs up and a spot in my dvd library!

Remember when I told you about that great little zombie flick, “28 days later”? I’ve seen it twice [which is rare for me these days] and can’t wait for it to arrive on dvd. If you haven’t seen it yet, but decide to, be sure you wait through the credits! Starting July 25th an alternate ending will run!

Another thing that I’ve been talking up forever is The Goon comic by Eric Powell. Well, the July 25th issue of Entertainment Weekly lists The Goon at #4 in its “Must List” column. The Goon also gets an “A” rating in the same issue’s review section. ZONErs are always ahead of the curve!
Eric Powell Takes the Goon Through Rough Stuff
Eric Powell writes, pencils and inks The Goon, which is one of the few comics that I buy EVERY time it comes out. Dark Horse just picked up The Goon so if you wanna beat the crowd, get on board now! You’ll also find Eric’s work on the covers to DC‘s Arkham Asylum: Living Hell six issue mini-series starting in May.
Eric did his version of Sly when I caught up with him at MegaCon. I was so tempted to get a Goon sketch but just had to have Eric in the SZ Gallery. Eric‘s take reminds me of a sports drawing from the ’30’s.
Rough Stuff, a trade paperback which collects The Goon‘s first three issues is now available.
I’ll bet it’s the first graphic novel to come with a “director’s commentary!” Yep, a trade paperback book with a director’s commentary.

Da Goon
Eric Powell writes and draws “The Goon” which is published by Albatross Exploding Funny Books. The Goon combines horror, sci-fi, humor, zombies, ufos, humor, gangsters, humor, werewolves… well, let’s just say anything that Eric wants to write or draw about would work in the series. And did I mention that it’s fun and funny?
Right now the second issue of the second series is out. But don’t worry, you can still get all of the back issues and a trade edition is coming in January. I’ll be getting it, even though I already have the issues off the stands. That should tell you just how much I enjoy Eric‘s work. I’ll bet you would too.

RIP: Drew Struzan
It was announced that Drew Struzan died yesterday. Mr. Struzan had dealt with Alzheimer’s disease for may years . Drew Struzan was 78.
Drew Stuzan was born in Oregon City, Oregon. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from the ArtCenter College of Design in Los Angeles. After graduation Drew Struzan began working for the design studio Pacific Eye & Ear. During his time there Mr. Struzan designed many record album covers including covers for the Beach Boys, the Bee Gees, Roy Orbison, Black Sabbath, Glenn Miller, Earth, Wind & Fire, and many others. Perhaps the most famous of Drew Struzan’s album art is Welcome to My Nightmare created for Alice Cooper.
Drew Struzan and a friend decided to start their own company, Pencil Pushers. In these early days, Mr. Struzan began to get movie poster work, but it was mostly for B-films such as Empire of the Ants. In 1977, Drew Stuzan was asked to work with Charles White III on a poster for the re-release of Star Wars. Mr. Struzan painted the human likenesses and Mr. White worked on the spacecraft, robots and Darth Vader. The poster was a hit.
Drew Struzan was considered by many to be THE go-to guy for a great movie poster. Steven Spielberg said that Drew Struzan was his favorite artist and “I had to almost live up to the art that we later were going to ask Drew to create for the poster.” High praise indeed.

I first became aware of Drew Struzan’s art before I even knew who he was. I saw a drawing of Sly Stallone for First Blood on a paperback cover. I actually wrote to the publishing company with a self-addressed stamped envelope asking for the name of the artist that did the art. I held out little hope for a response, but I got one. Sadly, the person who responded didn’t know the name of the artist. They did tell me that the company used was Pencil Pushers. Since this was the days before the internet, I never found where Pencil Pushers was located. Or that Drew Struzan created the art. I would learn that later when I like every other movie fan fell in love with his beautiful movie posters.
My favorite Drew Struzan posters are the First Blood paintings he did followed very closely by his artwork for I, the Jury starring Armand Assante. Thanks to the internet, as well as Drew Struzan’s personal website and his instagram page, we’ve been able to see many pieces of his art that weren’t movie posters. I love Drew Struzan’s sketches, drawings, commissions and personal work. There’s always a thrill to see a Drew Struzan piece for the first time. Like all great artists, the thrill of repeated viewings is always there.
