Sisu was a surprise hit.  The sequel written and directed by Jalmari Helander; starring Jorma Tommila, Richard Brake and Stephen Lang looks to be as good if not better.

On the Road? Buc-ee’s For All Your Travel Needs!

If you’re driving and you need gas, a clean restroom, food or drink, then you cannot do better than Buc-ee’s. My guess is that if you have a Buc-ee’s anywhere near you, you know about them.  But in case you don’t…

A Buc-ee’s is what you would get if you took a huge convenience store, added a bakery, a kitchen for breakfast, lunch and dinner items, a gas station with dozens of pumps, restrooms with dozens of individual stalls plus a worker who is dedicated to keeping each of them clean, multiple fountains for soft drinks of many flavors, sections for snacks of every kind, a wall of jerky of all types, plus books and other items you’d find in an ole country store.

Buc-ee’s are currently located in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.  New locations are coming to Alabama, Colorado, Louisiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee.  We have two in Florida.  When the closest one was being built, I didn’t understand the excitement.  “It’s a gas station for crying out loud,” I thought.

Once it was built, I visited and understood the appeal.  It’s a one-stop shop for all your traveling needs.  You get cheap gas with virtually no waiting because of many pumps.  There are all kinds of snacks available.  If you need breakfast, lunch or dinner, they have you covered.  The brisket sandwiches are most popular, but I’m partial to the turkey sandwiches.  If you’re a Coke or Pepsi fan, both are available as fountain drinks.  I usually choose an Arnold Palmer (lemonade & iced tea mix) that is also on the fountain.  Oh, and a fresh cinnamon roll from the bakery is a bonus!

It’s funny seeing a person on their first visit to a Buc-ee’s.  You can spot them a mile away.  They have the look of a kid visiting a theme park for the first time.  If you’re traveling and a Buc-ee’s is on your way, plan a stop.  You won’t be disappointed.

The Overview:  Beware of spoilers…

Brenda (Latifah), her two children, Kelly (Lee) and Cam (Dixon) along with Brenda’s brother, Reggie (Ludacris) are on a cross-country road trip.  Late at night in their hotel they hear a commotion and gunshot in the next room.  They go over to find a man dying from a bullet wound.  Brenda gives first aide until help arrives.

The next morning, Brenda provides what little information she has to the police.  Sheriff Hammers (Bridges) wants her to stick around, but Brenda says she’s available by phone. The family leaves.  Before too long Brenda receives a call from someone saying he knows who she is and he wants his money back!  Brenda hangs up, only to learn that Reggie took a satchel of cash from the hotel room while Brenda was giving first aide.  Now a brutal killer is on their trail… he wants his money and will kill everyone to get it!

End of the Road starts off well enough.  A family on the road in peril is a idea.  The problem is there’s never any mystery to who the killer is and while the family is placed in dangerous situations, the way the movie unfolds we know that there’s no real danger.  There is a tense situation at the start of the movie between two rednecks in a truck blocking the path of Brenda’s car.  Reggie is ready to fight, but Brenda is able to calm him and get the thugs to move on.  Later Brenda is trapped by a group of white supremacists and she turns into some sort of fighting machine, beating up some and shooting another!  In the final act of the film (get ready for a big spoiler!), we learn Sheriff Hammers is the killer!  We’re supposed to believe that 81 year old Beau Bridges is a physical threat to a woman who handed a butt-whoopin’ to Mace’s (UFC fighter Keith Jardine) skinheads?

What could have made this film work is to change the look and feel to a 1970s blaxploitation movie.  Since every major white character the family interacts with is racist or bad, it wouldn’t have been too difficult.  Throw in a soundtrack that echos Lalo Schifrin or Isacc Hayes and we’d have something.  Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen and we’re left with an OK movie that should have been better.

End of the Road earns 2 of 5 stars.

The poster and trailer for End of the Road looks better than I thought it might.  Since it is on Netflix, it’ll be a no-brainer to check it out!

Queen Latifah and Chris Bridges star in this road trip thriller about a mom of two kids who relocates across the country with her kids and brother. The family’s move to the southland is thrown into complete chaos when they witness a murder on their road trip. Now, the murderer will stop at nothing to find them.

3. For as much as the film is known for its vehicular action, Semler says they simulated a lot of travel too. “If you can see the road moving behind, we’re moving. If you don’t see anything moving behind, we’re not moving.”

16. Miller loves the bit with the mechanic (Steve J. Spears) in the swing evaluating the truck the engine and the blond guy repeating it much louder. It wasn’t planned, and the pair just started doing it on their own. “This is nice,” says Semler. Miller agrees saying it’s one of the lighter moments in the movie. On that same topic the duo count how many times Max smiles throughout the film, and they get as high as three.

22. The compound explosion was so big that they had to notify airlines in advance in case of any jets passing overhead.

There’s a Killer on the Road

A passerby found the severed head on Feb. 10, wrapped in two plastic bags and stuffed inside a backpack in Barstow, Calif. Authorities still haven’t identified the victim or her killer, but the circumstances point in a particular direction

So begins Blake Morrison’s article on highway serial killers for the USAToday.  According to Morrison…

,…In the past four decades, 459 deaths and 41 attempted homicides are believed to be linked to serial killers who are using the nation’s highways to find and dispose of their victims.

Although the story has the makings of a very creepy movie or novel, it’s even more frightening to imagine that it’s true.  You can read the full article and check out how many “highway killings” in each state are thought to be the work of serial killers by clicking here.

“The Road”

IMPAwards.com posted two new posters for “The Road.” I like the one above better than this one which I really don’t care for.  I think that the first gets across the struggle that the father and son are facing as they cross the barren landscape hoping to avoid cannibals and worse.  The second reminds me of the final shot of a movie, when the worst is over.

Viggo Mortensen [is this guy on a roll, or what?], headlines a cast that includes Robert Duvall, Charlize Theron and Guy Pearce.My hope is that it will be as good as the last adaptation of a Cormac McCarthy novel [No Country for Old Men]. Is that too much to ask?

3 for the Road… Internet Highway

It seems as if the blogging and website update bug has hit a couple of people lately…

Bill Ray Marimon aka “The Playa from the Himalaya” aka “The Raytrix” has created a website to show off his art. Bill is one of the best kept secrets in the comic world. He’s easily approachable, available for commissions and his prices are very reasonable. Check out his site and tell him I sent ya!

Jeff Parker, author and artist of The Interman [highly recommended] has redesigned his site with a really cool retro look that you just gotta love. Finally we get to my ole buddy John “Big” Beatty.

I have to give Big J an “A” for effort since he really does try — it’s just that the big guy gets so excited about “this” and then “that” comes along.

At any rate, Big John has redesigned his web site again and has a blog going. Please, please, post a message telling him you checked it out, and while you’re at it ask him to bring back his Beatty slant on the news. Always topical, always irreverant, and always a blast.

I sure miss my Big Beatty News.

The Plot…

Maben, a homeless single mother, is traveling with her young daughter.  Maben thought she had hit rock bottom.  She’s about to find out how wrong she can be.  Now Maben and her child are on the run from the law.

Russell Gaines was recently released from prison after seven years. Russell, while driving drunk, caused an accident that killed a man named Jason.  Jason’s brothers feel seven years in prison wasn’t enough.  Russell killed their brother and they will have their revenge.

Russell and Maben cross paths.  Russell feels sorry for Maben and her daughter (although he doesn’t know Maben’s full story).  Russell offers them a place to stay until they get back on their feet.

Russell’s troubles and Maben’s problems are on a collision course.

Thoughts (beware of spoilers)…

Don’t let the movie poster fool you.  Mel Gibson’s role is more of a glorified cameo.
