\"\"<\/a>Two <\/span>hurricanes<\/b> hit us in three weeks. The odds against this are <\/span>astronomical<\/b>. <\/span> <\/div>\n

But it happened.<\/p>\n

We had plenty of warning. We knew that Frances<\/b> was coming. <\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The crazy thing is, hurricanes<\/b> quite often change their paths. And Frances<\/b> was so big if you planned to leave, where could you go to be safe<\/b>?<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I worked at a shelter<\/b> on Thursday<\/b> and Friday<\/b> and then came home to ride out the worst with the wife<\/b> and kids<\/b>. It had been raining<\/b> a little bit each day since Hurricane Charley<\/b> hit three weeks ago, and on Saturday<\/b>, it really started coming down… and down… and down.<\/p>\n

We lost power<\/b> on Saturday<\/b> morning. Then the winds<\/b> picked up. From about 10 AM until well after midnight the rain <\/b>fell and strong winds<\/b> blew. On Sunday<\/b> the winds<\/b> finally began to die down but the rain <\/b>just kept coming. <\/p>\n

Monday <\/b>came and so did more rain<\/b>. The entire county went under a curfew<\/b>. Most people<\/b> were without electricity<\/b> and parts of the city<\/b> [and many homes<\/b>] were flooded<\/b>. Hurricane<\/b> force winds<\/b> had destroyed homes<\/b> and businesses<\/b>. And many streets<\/b> were under so much water <\/b>that they were impassible. You can imagine what that much water<\/b> did to homes. Luckily no fatalities<\/span><\/b> have been reported.<\/p>\n

We finally got our electricity<\/b> back on today. Our house <\/b>had very minor damage<\/b> and just a bit of water <\/b>came in. We had to cut down some trees<\/b>, but other than that we were spared<\/b>. I have friends<\/b> who weren’t so lucky, but each of them has said it could have been so much worse.<\/p>\n

And they’re right. <\/p>\n

It’s amazing how spoiled<\/b> we’ve become and how lucky<\/b> we are. After four or five days<\/b> of being trapped in a house<\/b> without electricity<\/b>… no AC<\/b>, no phones<\/b>, no internet<\/span><\/b>, no hot meals<\/b> or hot showers<\/b>, you begin to suddenly appreciate the small things<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Believe it or not, there’s another hurricane<\/b> out there brewing. The odds of it hitting the same part of Florida<\/b> again so soon after the last hurricane<\/b> are astronomical<\/b>…<\/p>\n
