Sequels are rarely as good as the original. There are far more <\/span>Jaws 2<\/b>‘s than there are <\/span>Godfather 2<\/b>‘s. And the farther you go down the sequel path, the more likely you are to see a mess.<\/span><\/p>\n

That’s why I’m happy to say that George A. Romero<\/a>‘s Land of the Dead <\/b>is a welcome addition to his zombie<\/b> series.<\/p>\n

My favorite is still “Night of the Living Dead.”<\/a><\/b> I doubt that any zombie movie<\/b> will ever top NOTLD<\/b>, not only because everything<\/b> came together on it [the low budget<\/b>, shooting in black and white<\/b>, a cast of unknowns<\/b>, etc.], but also because it was the first zombie movie<\/b> to really get to me. These weren’t island zombies<\/b> or some mummy<\/b> come back to life. These were our neighbors<\/b>, our friends<\/b> and even our family members<\/b> who were crawling out of the grave<\/b> to eat us!<\/p>\n

Land of the Dead<\/b> is my second favorite<\/b> of Romero<\/b>‘s quartet [followed by Dawn of the Dead<\/a><\/b> and then Day of the Dead<\/a><\/b>]. While I generally don’t like the idea of “smart” zombies<\/b>, I was intrigued by the idea that these zombies<\/b> were starting to learn<\/b>. I thought all of of the actors<\/b> were well cast<\/b>. The use of fireworks <\/b>as a plot device was a cool idea. Heck, I can even go with the idea that money<\/i> still has value<\/b> [although that plot element to me was the weakest]. <\/p>\n

Land of the Dead <\/b>is supposed to be Romero’s final zombie movie,<\/b> but I wouldn’t mind see him come back for another.<\/p>\n

“Night of the Living Dead”<\/span> rates an A+<\/span>
“Dawn of the Dead”<\/span> [original] rates a C+<\/span>
“Dawn of the Dead”<\/span> [remake] rates an A<\/span>
“Day of the Dead”<\/span> rates a C<\/span>
“Land of the Dead”<\/span> rates a B<\/span><\/p>\n
