\"\"<\/a>I can remember the first <\/span>Jim Steranko<\/b> comic book that I ever read. It was Nick Fury #1<\/a>. <\/span><\/span><\/span> I was 9 years old<\/b>. I’d been reading comics for years… Batman<\/b>, Superman<\/b>, Spider-Man<\/b>… but Nick Fury<\/b> [as written and drawn by Jim Steranko<\/b>] was like a movie come to life [even though it was on the printed page]. <\/div>\n

As I become older, I always kept my eye out for comics by Steranko<\/b>. They were few and far between [and sometimes only covers<\/b>], but boy, were they worth it. The man is a legend<\/b> despite the fact that his primary work in comics was less than ten years<\/b> and consisted of approximately 30 stories<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Years later I attended my first comic book convention<\/b>. My goal was to buy Steranko<\/b>‘s run on Nick Fury<\/b> in mint condition<\/b>. Not only was I able to score the set [and at a good price], but I ended up becoming friends with the dealer, Mike Kott<\/b>. I was surprised to learn that Steranko<\/b> had branched out into publishing. <\/b> At the same show I picked up my first issue of his publication, Mediascene<\/b> [which featured an interview with Doug Moench<\/b> and Paul Gulacy<\/b>].<\/p>\n

Steranko<\/b> had moved away from comics, instead he spent his time concentrating on painting<\/b> [he did a series of covers for The Shadow<\/b> paperbacks reprints] and publishing<\/b> [Mediascene<\/b> which later became Prevue<\/b>]. When Steranko<\/b> offered some of his Shadow<\/b> “pencil paintings”<\/b> for sale in the early 80’s<\/b>, I splurged and bought one. I was newly married, in college and the $225 bucks<\/b> it cost seemed like a fortune. Steranko<\/b> was nice enough to send along an autographed copy<\/a><\/b> of his book Unseen Shadows<\/b>.<\/p>\n

If you’re a Steranko<\/b> fan, then you know what an interesting life<\/b> he’s led. In addition to being a comic book artist<\/b>, a publisher<\/b>, a painter<\/b>, a professional magician \/ escape artist<\/b> [in his youth he traveled with carnivals<\/b> and circuses<\/b>], a musician<\/b> and more. If you’re just discovering Steranko<\/b>, then you’re in for a treat!<\/p>\n

Steranko<\/b> is still a huge draw at conventions around the country. Last year he was a special guest<\/b> at FX 2005<\/b>. [In fact it was his cover for the program book<\/b><\/a> that inspired this post.] I was unable to attend the FX<\/b> show, but even if I had, there would have been no chance of a Steranko<\/b> piece for my Stallone Gallery<\/b>. Steranko<\/b> doesn’t sketch at shows and seldom does commissions… and those that he does do cost thousands!<\/p>\n

Every so often I love to pull out my Chandler<\/a><\/b> graphic novel, or the three issues<\/b> of Captain America<\/b> that he did… but my favorite is still his run on Nick Fury<\/a><\/b>. Over 35 years<\/b> later, I still get the same rush as that 9 year old<\/b> seeing it for the first time.<\/p>\n
