It was                          <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><a style=\"color: rgb(255, 0, 0);\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stallonezone.com\/z092405nick_1.jpg\">Nick Fury #1<\/a>.  <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> I was <b>9 years old<\/b>. I&#8217;d been reading                          comics for years&#8230; <b>Batman<\/b>, <b>Superman<\/b>,  <b>Spider-Man<\/b>&#8230; but <b>Nick Fury<\/b> [as written and                          drawn by <b>Jim Steranko<\/b>] was like a movie come to life [even though it was on the printed                          page]. <\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: arial; text-align: justify;\">                       <\/div>\n<p style=\"font-family: arial; text-align: justify;\" class=\"bodytext\">As I become older, I always                          kept my eye out for comics by <b>Steranko<\/b>. They were                          few and far between [and sometimes <b>only                          covers<\/b>], but boy, were they worth it. The man is a <b>legend<\/b> despite the fact that his primary work                          in comics was less than <b>ten years<\/b> and consisted of approximately <b>30 stories<\/b>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"font-family: arial; text-align: justify;\">                       <\/div>\n<p style=\"font-family: arial; text-align: justify;\" class=\"bodytext\">Years later I attended                          my first c<b>omic book convention<\/b>. My goal was to                          buy <b>Steranko<\/b>&#8216;s run on <b>Nick Fury<\/b> in <b>mint condition<\/b>. Not                          only was I able to score the set [and at a good price],                          but I ended up becoming friends with the dealer, <b>Mike                          Kott<\/b>. I was surprised to learn that <b>Steranko<\/b> had branched out into <b>publishing.                          <\/b> At the same show I picked up my first issue of his publication, <b>Mediascene<\/b> [which                          featured an interview with <b>Doug Moench<\/b> and <b>Paul                          Gulacy<\/b>].<\/p>\n<div style=\"font-family: arial; text-align: justify;\">                       <\/div>\n<p style=\"font-family: arial; text-align: justify;\" class=\"bodytext\"><b>Steranko<\/b> had moved                          away from comics, instead he spent his time concentrating                          on <b>painting<\/b> [he did a series of covers for <b>The                          Shadow<\/b> paperbacks reprints] and<b> publishing<\/b> [<b>Mediascene<\/b> which later became                          <b>Prevue<\/b>]. When <b>Steranko<\/b> offered some of his <b>Shadow<\/b> <b>&#8220;pencil paintings&#8221;<\/b>                          for sale in the early <b>80&#8217;s<\/b>, I splurged and bought                          one. I was newly married, in college and the <b>$225 bucks<\/b>                          it cost seemed like a fortune. <b>Steranko<\/b> was nice                          enough to send along an <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stallonezone.com\/z092405sterankoauto.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">autographed                          copy<\/a><\/b> of his book <b>Unseen Shadows<\/b>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"font-family: arial; text-align: justify;\">                       <\/div>\n<p style=\"font-family: arial; text-align: justify;\" class=\"bodytext\">If you&#8217;re a <b>Steranko<\/b>                          fan, then you know what an <b>interesting                          life<\/b> he&#8217;s led. In addition to being a <b>comic                          book artist<\/b>, a <b>publisher<\/b>, a <b>painter<\/b>,                          a <b>professional magician \/ escape artist<\/b> [in his                          youth he traveled with <b>carnivals<\/b> and <b>circuses<\/b>],                          a<b> musician<\/b> and more. If you&#8217;re just discovering <b>Steranko<\/b>, then you&#8217;re in                          for a treat!<\/p>\n<div style=\"font-family: arial; text-align: justify;\">                       <\/div>\n<p style=\"font-family: arial; text-align: justify;\" class=\"bodytext\"><b>Steranko<\/b> is still                          a huge draw at conventions around the country. Last year                          he was a <b>special guest<\/b> at <b>FX 2005<\/b>. [In fact                          it was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stallonezone.com\/z092405steranko.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><b>his                          cover for the program book<\/b><\/a> that inspired this post.] I was unable to attend the <b>FX<\/b>                          show, but even if I had, there would have been no chance of a <b>Steranko<\/b> piece for my                          <b>Stallone Gallery<\/b>. <b>Steranko<\/b> doesn&#8217;t sketch                          at shows and seldom does commissions&#8230; and those that                          he does do cost thousands!<\/p>\n<div style=\"font-family: arial; text-align: justify;\">                       <\/div>\n<p style=\"font-family: arial; text-align: justify;\" class=\"bodytext\">Every so often I love to                          pull out my <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stallonezone.com\/z092405chandler.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Chandler<\/a><\/b>                          graphic novel, or the <b>three issues<\/b> of<b> Captain America<\/b> that he did&#8230; but my favorite                          is still his run on <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stallonezone.com\/z092405nick_4.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Nick                          Fury<\/a><\/b>. Over <b>35 years<\/b> later, I still get the same rush as that<b>                          9 year old<\/b> seeing it for the first time.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I can remember the first Jim Steranko comic book that I ever read.
