\"\"<\/a>Peter Jackson’s King Kong <\/b>is a worthy successor to the original <\/span>King Kong<\/b>.<\/span> <\/div>\n

The original King Kong<\/b> is considered a classic<\/b>. It inspired generations<\/b> of film makers and paved the way for a new genre of movie <\/b> which spawned countless imitations<\/b> in film<\/b> and other entertainment media<\/b>. Consider all of the King Kong<\/b> riffs that you’ve seen in tv, comics, novels<\/b>, etc. Yeah, the original King Kong<\/b> is the gold standard<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Peter Jackson’s King Kong <\/b>is going to be dismissed by some pureists<\/b> who won’t consider anything but the original<\/b> King Kong<\/b> to be the best.<\/b> For many film buffs<\/b>,the original<\/b> King Kong<\/b> is THE movie<\/b><\/u> that made them love film<\/b>. <\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The original <\/b>King Kong<\/b> touched them in a way that no other film ever did<\/b> before and when they watch it they recapture that feeling<\/b>. They’re taken back to a time and a place that was special. No matter how good Peter Jackson’s King Kong<\/b> is, it won’t be able to rekindle those feelings<\/b> and will therefore fall short. Heck, I’d feel the same way about any Rocky<\/b> movie that wasn’t made by Sly Stallone<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Ok, so how good is Peter Jackson<\/b>‘s take on the big ape?<\/p>\n

That I can answer. It’s absolutely great<\/b>. Easily one of my two favorite movies<\/b> of the year.<\/p>\n

First of all, my hat is off to Peter Jackson<\/b>. King Kong<\/b> has been the film<\/b> that he’s wanted to tackle since before he became a filmmaker. Everything that he’d done before Kong<\/b> was just to prepare him for Kong<\/b>.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Everything <\/b>about the movie is near perfect<\/b>. Loved the cast<\/b>. The special effects<\/b> were flawless<\/b>. The music<\/b> and editing<\/b> were as well. The screenplay<\/b>, while based on the original King Kong<\/b> screenplay, kicked up the action<\/b> and took me to a place that was familiar but much, much more dangerous<\/b>. All aspects of the production combined to create a movie-going experience that was truly an experience<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Before I go on, let me say that if you haven’t seen the movie<\/b>, you may want to stop reading<\/b> since I’m going to discuss aspects that contain SPOILERS…<\/b><\/p>\n

… Still here… ok then…<\/b><\/p>\n

Some folks<\/b> have complained that the first hour is too slow<\/b>. I went in thinking that this might be the case, but for me, it wasn’t<\/b>. I enjoyed <\/b>the character development<\/b>.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I loved<\/b> the look of the island<\/b>. The natives<\/b> were realistic and frightening<\/b>. Come to think of it, even the island looked frightening<\/b>! And you’ve gotta love the way the native got onto the ship!<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

And then the appearance<\/b> of Kong<\/b>. Man, he looks so real<\/b>. And I’m not just talking about his physical appearance<\/b>. He moves like a giant ape should<\/b> [note I said should, not does]. His fur gets matted and stuff gets in it. <\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I think it’s cool that Kong’s scarred and older looking<\/b>. He’s a warrior<\/b> on an island that demands you fight to survive. His battle<\/b> with not one, but three tyranesarous rex<\/b> [at the same time] was nothing short of amazing<\/b>. All the while he’s fighting them, he’s protecting Ann<\/b>… even as he throws punches, climbs, dodges and falls. He’s not called “King” Kong<\/b> without reason.<\/p>\n

But there’s more to King Kong <\/b>than just the baddest mo<\/b> on the island. Kong <\/b>is the last of his kind<\/b> and his loneliness<\/b> is apparent. I also love it that Kong is intelligent<\/b>. He has a sense of humor<\/b> and enjoys the beauty of a sunrise<\/b>. If you haven’t seen the movie, then my last sentence probably has you scratching your head. If you’ve seen the movie then you know it will break your heart <\/b>before the movie’s end.<\/p>\n

I love the search for Ann<\/b> in New York<\/b>… the frantic, wild search<\/b> for just the right women <\/b>and then how everything slows down and nothing else in the world matters once you find her<\/b>. The escape with Ann<\/b> is exciting and then the interlude on the ice<\/b>. Beautiful<\/u>. Unexpected and so sweet<\/b>. It was at this point that I could feel the tears forming. Because the interlude<\/b> wouldn’t last. <\/p>\n

Kong<\/b>‘s climb up the Empire State building<\/b> still had one more surprise<\/b>. If you saw the movie, you know what I mean. Kong<\/b> places Ann<\/b> in a place of safety and sits next to her. He looks out at the horizon and sees a sunrise and “tells” Ann<\/b> it’s beautiful<\/b>. Now the tears were flowing…<\/p>\n

… because here came the planes. And you know the rest.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

So is Peter Jackson’s King Kong<\/b> better<\/u> than the original King Kong<\/b>? <\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Who’s to say? Comparing the original King Kong <\/b>to Peter Jackson’s King Kong<\/b> is like comparing an athlete from 1933<\/b> to one from today. Odds are that today’s athlete <\/b>is bigger and faster<\/b> but does that make him better? Does it really matter?<\/p>\n

I guess that’s why sports leagues<\/b> create their own Halls of Fame<\/b>. Different athletes from different time periods<\/b> can be honored<\/b> and there is room for all who deserve<\/b> a spot.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Peter Jackson’s King Kong <\/b>deserves a spot next to the original King Kong<\/b>. Let others then argue which Kong is King<\/b>. <\/p>\n

As for me, I’ll spend my time watching them both!<\/p>\n

The Original “King Kong”<\/span> rates an A+. Peter Jackson’s King Kong <\/span>rates an A+.<\/span><\/p>\n
