Yesterday my son and I were channel surfing. Suddenly we came across “<\/span>Braveheart.” <\/span>We both stopped talking and turned to watch the scene.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mel<\/span> was giving the troops the famous pep-talk. You know the one… “They can take our lives, but they’ll never take our FREEEEEEEEEDOM!”<\/span><\/p>\n

The next thing you know we were both grinning from ear to ear as we spouted classic lines from <\/span>“Braveheart.”<\/span><\/p>\n

I can remember <\/span>Entertainment Tonight<\/span> doing a piece about “action star” <\/span>Mel Gibson<\/span> on location starring in and directing <\/span>“Braveheart.”<\/span> I thought at the time, “Man, is he taking a risk!” <\/span>Mel<\/span> was walking away from barrels of money to do another <\/span>“Lethal Weapon”<\/span> and instead was directing [and starring in] a movie about some guy who lived hundreds of years ago that hardly anybody even knew existed.<\/span><\/p>\n

We all know how it turned out.<\/span><\/p>\n

Just a few years ago I remember when I first heard <\/span>Mel<\/span>‘s plans for <\/span>“The Passion of the Christ.” <\/span>This time <\/span>Mel<\/span> was walking away from trunkloads of money for another <\/span>“Lethal Weapon”<\/span> to instead direct a movie [which he wasn’t going to star in] about <\/span>Jesus Christ<\/span>. To make the movie even more unlikely to be successful, it didn’t feature a cast of international [or even national] superstars and was subtitled!<\/span><\/p>\n

We all know how it turned out.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mel’s next film, <\/span>Apocalypto<\/span>, is a violent tale which takes place <\/span>3,000 years ago<\/span> and follows a <\/span>Mayan<\/span> hero who is on the run. <\/span>Gibson<\/span> won’t appear in the film and it will be subtitled.<\/span><\/p>\n
