Snider <\/strong>and<strong> Mental_Floss <\/strong>present <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mentalfloss.com\/article\/65434\/15-fun-facts-about-weird-science\" target=\"_blank\">15 Fun Facts About <em>Weird Science<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 <\/strong>Here are three of my favorites&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"Default\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>9. THE SCENE WHERE GARY TALKS LIKE AN OLD AFRICAN-AMERICAN BLUESMAN WAS INSPIRED BY RICHARD PRYOR.<\/strong><br \/>\nHall recounted in an interview that he and John Hughes would \u201cwatch Richard Pryor movies on the weekend. And we would imitate this character called Mudball that Richard Pryor would do. And so it was really just a product of being Richard Pryor fans that John said, \u2018Hey, why don\u2019t we create this scene where you go into a bar and do that?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>11. IT TAKES ITS TITLE FROM A 1950S COMIC BOOK, BUT OTHER SIMILARITIES ARE COINCIDENTAL.<\/strong><br \/>\nEC Comics published 22 issues of <em>Weird Science<\/em> between 1950 and 1953, alongside more popular anthology titles like <em>Tales from the Crypt<\/em>.\u00a0Hollywood mega-producer Joel Silver got the rights to all the old EC stuff in the \u201980s, and Hughes was in his office one day when boxes of the comics were being delivered and unpacked. Seeing the title <em>Weird Science<\/em>, and thinking of a beautiful woman he and Silver had seen earlier that day, Hughes said, \u201cWhat if two kids figure out a way to make that girl that was in the commissary?\u201d This is according to Silver\u2019s recollection, anyway. \u201cI already had rights to the EC books, so that\u2019s how I convinced them to let me have the title.\u201d Now, there was a story in an issue of <em>Weird Science<\/em> that bore a superficial resemblance to Hughes\u2019 idea\u2014\u201cMade of the Future,\u201d in which a man builds a wife from a kit he got on a trip to the year 2150.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>13. BILL PAXTON GOT HIS CHARACTER\u2019S DISTINCTIVE MILITARY-STYLE HAIRCUT WITHOUT HUGHES\u2019 PERMISSION.<\/strong><br \/>\nHis first day on the set, \u201cI told [the film\u2019s makeup artist] I wanted to do a haircut that was really intense,\u201d Paxton told The AV Club in 2012. \u201cHe\u2019s the one who suggested the flattop, but long on the sides and slicked back. And he was afraid he was going to lose his job to cut it like that without having it approved by the producer or the director, but I said, \u2018Just do it.\u2019\u201d Fortunately, Hughes loved it, along with everything else Paxton brought to the character.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eric D.
