Creed <\/em><\/strong>[2015] The<\/u><\/strong> Pitch<\/u>:<\/strong> \u201dHey Sly, my name is Ryan Coogler and I have an idea to continue the Rocky legacy\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n The<\/u><\/strong> Tagline<\/u>:<\/strong> \u201cYour legacy is more than a name.\u201d<\/p>\n The<\/u><\/strong> Overview<\/u>:<\/strong> <\/strong>Beware of Spoilers\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n Sylvester Stallone<\/strong> was content that after six feature-length films Rocky\u2019s<\/strong> story had been told. Ryan Coogler<\/strong> had a different outlook and movie fans are better for it.<\/p>\n Creed<\/strong><\/em> isn\u2019t a sequel as much as an expansion of the Rocky Balboa<\/strong> universe. In the past films, Rocky<\/strong> was the center of attention and Rocky\u2019s<\/strong> struggle was the reason for the movie. Now the focus shifts to Adonis Creed, Apollo\u2019s<\/strong> illegitimate son.<\/p>\n In less adept hands Creed<\/strong><\/em> could have been a straight-to-video attempt to squeeze out the last few dollars from a series that many (including Stallone<\/strong>) thought was over. Instead we\u2019re treated to one of the most satisfying, emotional and uplifting movies that I can remember ever seeing.<\/p>\n Michael B. Jordan<\/strong> is an amazing actor. He is required to go through a gauntlet of emotions throughout the film but they are never overstated or hammy. He and Stallone<\/strong> share a couple of scenes where the actor talking isn\u2019t the most important part of the scene. The range of emotions that they go through is subtle and all the more powerful because they pull us into the scenes.<\/p>\n Sly<\/strong> has never been better. Never. An Oscar<\/strong> nomination should be in the bag. Don\u2019t believe me? Rewatch the scene with the doctor when she tells Rocky<\/strong> his diagnosis. Or when Rocky<\/strong> returns to the gym. Or when Rocky<\/strong> talks to Adonis<\/strong> about Adrian<\/strong>, what she went through and what he would go through for one more day with her. Heck, think about the scene with Rocky<\/strong> and Adonis<\/strong> in the holding cell.<\/p>\n Ryan Coogler<\/strong> deserves special mention for making Creed<\/strong><\/em> happen. Not only can Coogler<\/strong> write, but his direction is spot-on. Coogler<\/strong> creates a world where all of the characters are believable.<\/p>\n There are so many cool touches Coogler<\/strong> puts in the film \u2013 Adonis<\/strong> watching the second fight between Rocky<\/strong> and Apollo<\/strong> with Adonis<\/strong> mimicking Rocky\u2019s<\/strong> punches \u2013 Rocky<\/strong> talking about how everything he cared for has moved on [Adrian<\/strong> and Paulie<\/strong> have died, his son lives in Vancouver, even his turtle tank now only contains one turtle] \u2013 the fact that Rocky<\/strong> is still recognized as a celebrity \u201cWhen were you going to tell me your uncle was Rocky Balboa<\/strong>\u201d is just one example] but that time has moved on as well..<\/p>\n Coogler<\/strong> made what could have been a simple boxing movie into a drama about so much more than boxing\u2026 yeah, I guess you could call Creed<\/strong><\/em> a modern day Rocky<\/strong><\/em>.
