North<\/strong><\/p>\n Starring: Humphrey Bogart<\/strong> and Gloria Grahame<\/strong><\/p>\n The Pitch: \u201cLet\u2019s get Bogie and Gloria Grahame and make a really noir film.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n The Tagline: \u201cThe Bogart Suspense Picture with the Surprise Finish!\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Overview: Beware of Spoilers\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n Dixon Steele<\/strong> (Bogart<\/strong>) is an ex-military screenwriter who hasn\u2019t had a hit since before the war. Since his return home, Steele\u2019s<\/strong> quick temper and willingness to fight at even the smallest slight has left him with a bad reputation with the studios and run-ins with the law. So when Steele<\/strong> gets the chance to write the screenplay adaptation for a popular novel he knows he\u2019s going to have to even if he can\u2019t bring himself to read it.<\/p>\n As fortune would have it, the hatcheck girl at one of Steele\u2019s<\/strong> favorite restaurants has read and loves the book. Steele<\/strong> invites her to his apartment late one evening after she gets off work with the idea that she can tell him the story. Steele\u2019s neighbor<\/strong> (Grahame<\/strong>) sees him taking the young lady into his apartment. Later, as the girl tells Steele<\/strong> the story, he sees Grahame<\/strong> on her balcony. It\u2019s late and Steele<\/strong> gives the girl money for her time and cab fare home.<\/p>\n The next morning a Detective<\/strong> informs Steele<\/strong> that the girl was murdered and her dead body was found at the side of a deserted road. Steele\u2019s<\/strong> only alibi is Grahame<\/strong> who is called to the police station. Although they had never met before, there is an immediate spark between Bogart<\/strong> and Graham<\/strong>. Although she saw the girl enter with Bogart<\/strong>, Grahame<\/strong> didn\u2019t see the girl leave, but that\u2019s not what she tells the cops. Instead Grahame<\/strong> offers that she did see the girl leave on her own… which is just the alibi that Bogart<\/strong> needs.<\/p>\n Over the next few weeks, Bogart<\/strong> and Graham<\/strong> fall in love and she begins to question if she alibied a killer.<\/p>\n Final Thoughts:<\/strong> The tagline touts a surprise finish and that is what you get. This is a dark film and one of Bogart\u2019s best roles<\/strong>. I\u2019m a fan of Gloria Grahame<\/strong> and this is one of her most famous movies.
