\"\"<\/a>Remember<\/span><\/a><\/strong> when I said that last week I’d ordered two graphic novels<\/strong> and told you how much I enjoyed <\/span>Last of the Independents<\/strong><\/span><\/a> by Matt Fraction<\/strong> and Kieron Dwyer<\/strong>? Well, today I’m going to tell you about the second book, You Are Here<\/span><\/a><\/strong> by Kyle Baker<\/strong> that I enjoyed even more!<\/span><\/p>\n

Noel Coleman<\/strong> thinks he’s got it made. Coleman<\/strong> is in love with Helen<\/strong>; a beautiful, spiritual and sesitive animal lover. They’ve been together a year and Coleman<\/strong> is ready to settle down and marry her. There’s just one catch. Coleman<\/strong> isn’t the man he’s led Helen<\/strong> to believe he is. Sure, he’s a talented painter… but he’s also criminal<\/strong> who’s been on the run <\/strong>for a year. Hoping to leave his checkered past behind, Coleman<\/strong> goes back to New York City<\/strong> to sell his apartment so he can return to the country and live happily ever after with Helen<\/strong>. <\/span><\/div>\n

You just know that ain’t happenin’.<\/span><\/div>\n

Shortly after arriving in New York<\/strong>, Coleman<\/strong> accidently meets up with his old crime partner, Oscar<\/strong>. Coleman<\/strong> and Oscar<\/strong> decide to hit some of their old haunts and Coleman<\/strong> learns that the cops<\/strong> and a homicidal maniac<\/strong> are still looking for him. Helen<\/strong> shows up to surprise Coleman<\/strong> and before you know it they’re both running for their lives<\/strong>. The book ends with a fight to the death <\/strong>and a conclusion that you won’t be expecting<\/strong>!<\/span><\/div>\n

Kyle Baker’s art<\/strong> is amazing<\/strong>. You Are Here<\/span><\/a><\/strong> is visually stunning<\/strong>. Baker’s use of color<\/strong> and a storyboard panel design<\/strong> is to complete advantage. The story is full of humor<\/strong> and yet the book never loses it’s pulp feel<\/strong>. It’s a crazy combination<\/strong> that works. It’s not a comedy<\/strong>, but there are comedic moments<\/strong>. It’s not noir<\/strong> by the strictest definition, but it has that undercurrent<\/strong>. The art is cartoony<\/strong> but not in a bigfoot way<\/strong>. And you gotta love it that Robert Mitchum<\/span><\/a><\/strong> plays the homicidal maniac<\/strong>. I loved every page. You probably would too.<\/span><\/div>\n
