IT WAS CRITICIZED FOR BEING A COPY OF <em>STAR WARS<\/em>.<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Having thought of the two worlds simultaneously, George Lucas may have cribbed some of his own work and other well-known stories a little too much for <em>Willow<\/em>, and some critics noticed.\u201cWithout anything like [<em>Star Wars<\/em>\u2019] eager, enthusiastic tone, and indeed with an understandable weariness, <em>Willow<\/em> recapitulates images from <em>Snow White<\/em>, <em>The Wizard of Oz<\/em>,<em>Gulliver&#8217;s Travels<\/em>,<em> Mad Max<\/em>, <em>Peter Pan, Star Wars<\/em> itself, the <em>Hobbit<\/em> saga, Japanese monster films of the 1950s, the Bible and a million fairy tales,&#8221; <span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1988\/05\/20\/movies\/review-film-willow-a-george-lucas-production.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s2\">wrote<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s2\"> <span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"s2\">Janet Maslin of <em>The New York Times<\/em>. &#8220;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>One tiny figure combines the best attributes of Tinkerbell, the Good Witch Glinda and the White Rock Girl.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Later in her review, Maslin continued to point of the similarities between the two films: \u201cWhen the sorcerer tells Willow to follow his heart, he becomes the Obi-Wan Kenobi of a film that also has its Darth Vader, R2-D2, C-3P0 and Princess Leia stand-ins. Much energy has gone into the creation of their names, some of which (General Kael) have recognizable sources and others (Burglekutt, Cherlindrea, Airk) have only tongue-twisting in mind. Not even the names have anything like <em>Star Wars<\/em>-level staying power.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"s1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">6. THE DEATH DOGS WERE REAL DOGS IN COSTUME.<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">The big bad in the film, Bavmorda, has demon dogs that terrorize Willow\u2019s village. The dogs are more boar-like than canine, but they were portrayed by\u00a0Rottweilers. The prop team outfitted the dogs with rubber masks and used animatronic heads for close-up scenes.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"s1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">10. JOHN CUSACK AUDITIONED FOR THE PART OF MADMARTIGAN.<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Val Kilmer famously played the role of the reluctant hero two years after played Iceman in <em>Top Gun<\/em> (1986), but he was not the only big name to audition for the role. Davis revealed in a commentary track that he once read with John Cusack, who in 1987 had already starred in<em>Sixteen Candles<\/em> (1984), <em>Stand by Me<\/em> (1986), and <em>Hot Pursuit<\/em> (1987).<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Andrew LaSane\u00a0and Mental_Floss\u00a0present 11 Magical Facts About Willow.\u00a0\u00a0Here are three of my favorites&#8230; 3.
