\"\"<\/a>Last night <\/span>The Ultimate Fighter Finale<\/span> took place. There were several very good fights including Manny <\/span><\/span>Gamburyan Vs. Nathan <\/span>Diaz for the “title” and Jens <\/span><\/span>Pulver <\/span>fighting<\/span> <\/span>BJ Penn<\/span> to settle an old score. Before we look at those fights, let’s check out the <\/span>under card.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cole Miller<\/span> easily beat Andy Wang<\/span> by a TKO<\/span> at 1:10<\/span> of the first round<\/span>. Miller<\/span> is one of those guys that doesn’t look tough, but is.<\/span><\/p>\n

Joe <\/span>Lauzon is another kid who doesn’t look tough, but he proved otherwise when he beat Brandon Melendez<\/span> with a rear naked choke at 2:09 <\/span>of the second round<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although Doug Evans<\/span> seemed to easily win the first round, Roger Huerta<\/span> won by a TKO<\/span> in the second<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the most controversial fight <\/span>of the night, Gray Maynard<\/span> and Rob Emerson’s bout <\/span>was labeled a “No Contest”.<\/span> Maynard<\/span> dominated the first round and looked to end things in the second when he picked Emerson<\/span> up and slammed him to the mat. Emerson<\/span> was already in pain and the slam was sure to end it. When they hit the mat, Emerson tapped<\/span> and the fight was over… except for the decision… which was ruled a no contest. Here’s why: when Maynard<\/span> drove Emerson<\/span> to the mat, he also slammed his own head<\/span> into it and knocked himself out<\/span>! The decision was that since neither man was able to continue, the fight was ruled a “No Contest”.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

In a post fight interview Maynard<\/span> tried to argue that he wasn’t out, but simply tired<\/span>. This was patently NOT THE CASE<\/span>. Maynard<\/span> was knocked senseless by his own slam<\/span> and to argue otherwise [especially as the video of him with his eyes rolled back and then waking up and trying to raise up but instead falling over] was <\/span>ridiculous. I do think that an argument could be made that since Emerson<\/span> tapped before it was clear that Maynard was out, he should have won. Maynard was dominating<\/span> and had he not knocked himself out would have won.<\/span><\/p>\n

Manny Gamburyan Vs. Nathan Diaz<\/span> was somewhat anti-climatic. Gamburyan<\/span> won the first round despite repeated efforts by Diaz<\/span> to gain a submission. The second round ended abruptly<\/span> when Gamburyan<\/span> shot in for a takedown and dislocated his own shoulder! [At least he didn’t knock himself out.] Diaz<\/span> was awarded the “title”<\/span> of the Ultimate Fighter<\/span> for season five and a six figure contract<\/span> with the UFC<\/span>.<\/p>\n

The final fight of the night was Penn vs Pulver<\/span>. Penn<\/span> had won in their previous meeting<\/span> five years ago. There had been bad blood<\/span> between them since. That all ended when BJ Penn<\/span> submitted Pulver<\/span> with a rear naked choke at 3:12<\/span> of the second round<\/span>. Both Penn <\/span>and Pulver<\/span> congratulated each other on a tough fight and even agreed to work together in the future. I was glad to see that their feud had ended<\/span>. I like both of these guys and couldn’t decide who I would pull for. Ultimately, I like that Penn<\/span> won and things were settled.<\/p>\n

Season Six <\/span>of the Ultimate Fighter <\/span>is set to have Matt Serra<\/span> and Matt Hughes<\/span> as opposing coaches and we can be sure that they’ll fight in the finale.<\/p>\n

In other MMA news<\/span>: last night <\/span> Kimbo Slice<\/span> easily won<\/span><\/a> his mixed martial arts debut<\/span> against 46-year old<\/span> former heavyweight boxing champion Ray Mercer<\/span>.<\/span> Kimbo<\/span> submittd Mercer<\/span> with a guillotine at 1:12<\/span> into the first round<\/span>.<\/span> Kimbo<\/span> then issued a post fight challenge to “Tank” Abbott<\/span> to fight on September 14th<\/span>. Kimbo<\/span> is best known for his extremely popular “underground” fights<\/span> that began appearing on You-Tube<\/span>. It will be interesting to see how Kimbo<\/span> does when he meets an real MMA fighter<\/span>.<\/p>\n
