Heroes Con 2007<\/span> was a blast. Rather than go into a lengthy <\/span>con report<\/span>, I thought I’d post up some pictures<\/span> and my thoughts<\/span>. Hope you enjoy them half as much as I did the show…<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n

\"\"<\/a>This is the crew that I hung with for most of the weekend. Starting at the left and working around the table, my oldest son <\/span>Mike<\/span>, <\/span>“The James”<\/span>, <\/span>Raf Kayanan<\/span>, <\/span>John Beatty<\/span>, <\/span>Andrew Robinson<\/span>, <\/span>Matt<\/span>, <\/span>Lazenby<\/span> and <\/span>Hal<\/span>. Getting together with these guys is always a blast. <\/span>Raf, Beatty<\/span> and <\/span>Andrew<\/span> were set up at the con next to each other [<\/span>Bob McLeod<\/span>, <\/span>Derec Donovan<\/span> and <\/span>John Dell<\/span> were also within reach] so it was a pretty hopping spot. Originally <\/span>Dave Johnson<\/span> was supposed to be set up in the same area, but unfortunately he couldn’t make it this year.<\/span><\/div>\n

\"\"<\/a>That’s Matt Fraction<\/span><\/a> pictured above. He’s about to autograph my copy of Last of the Independents<\/span><\/a> which I highly recommend<\/span><\/a>! It was my first time meeting Matt<\/span> who also writes the popular Casanova<\/span><\/a> comic series.<\/p>\n

Rick Remender<\/span><\/a> not only autographed my Doll and Creature<\/span><\/a> graphic novel [review coming soon], but did an amazing piece for my Stallone<\/span> gallery. I’ll post it once it’s scanned. Rick<\/span> said that The Last Days of American Crime<\/span><\/a> is in the works. I can’t wait. Rick<\/span> has so many irons in the fire with Fear Agent<\/a>,<\/span> Sea of Red<\/span><\/a>, Strange Girl<\/span><\/a> and more that I was starting to think that he’d never get to it.<\/p>\n

Another first was meeting Kyle Baker<\/span><\/a>. I’m a huge fan of Kyle’s work<\/span>. You Are Here<\/span><\/a> is one of my all time favorite graphic novels<\/span><\/a>. Kyle<\/span> signed mine and told me his an idea for a sequel. I truly hope that someday he’s able to do it. I also picked up Kyle Baker Cartoonist Volume 1<\/a> & Volume 2<\/a><\/span> and Nat Turner Volume 1<\/a> & Volume 2<\/a><\/span>. I was also lucky enough to get a Rocky<\/span> sketch from Kyle<\/span> [which I’ll post later]. Kyle Baker<\/span> is an amazing talent and it was a pleasure meeting him.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>One of the best parts of each Heroes Convention<\/span> is watching artists create pieces for the auction. That’s Craig Hamilton<\/span> working on his “300”<\/span> piece. Craig’s an amazing artist<\/span> who puts some much thought into everything he does. One of the cool things about Craig’s painting<\/span> is that it works both horizontally [as seen above] or vertically<\/span><\/a>! Tony Harris<\/span> worked on a wicked “Phantom of the Opera”<\/span><\/a> piece, while Phil Noto<\/span> brought Batman, Batgirl and Catwoman<\/span><\/a> together as Andrew Robinson<\/span> started “After the Parade”<\/span><\/a> .<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>That’s Gus Vasquez<\/span> and his lil cousin Rosario Dawson<\/span>. [Yeah, Rosario Dawson<\/span> as in “Sin City”<\/span>, “Grindhouse”<\/span>, “Clerks 2”<\/span>, and a whole lot more!] Rosario<\/span> and Gus<\/span> were back as special guests of the show and also the auctioneers! They did a great job and a new record was set when Adam Hughes’ Star Wars<\/span> painting topped out at $5K<\/span>!<\/p>\n

\nIt was so cool just to spend the weekend among friends, many of whom happen to be talented artists. Andrew Robinson<\/span> definitely falls into both categories. The drawing above and this one<\/span><\/a> are just two pieces that Andrew<\/span> had created for his latest sketchbook<\/span>. I was also lucky to see an advance copy of Andrew’s new art book<\/span> that will be coming from Alberto Ruiz’s Brandstudio Press<\/span>. Andrew’s book <\/span>is going to be a hot seller and I can’t wait to get my copy!<\/p>\n

Raf<\/span> and Alberto<\/span> spoke and Raf<\/span> may have an “art of” book coming soon. I can’t believe I didn’t get any pictures of any of the sketches Raf<\/span> produced. I was just too in awe of his work since it had been so many years since I’d been able to sit and watch him draw. I did get this shot<\/span><\/a> and this one<\/a> of two Punisher<\/span> sketches that Beatty<\/a><\/span> worked up for some lucky fans.<\/p>\n

I guess I was just too busy actually talking to friends [Gary McKee<\/span>, Jason Walker<\/span>, and Eric Layton<\/span> to name just three] and saying “hi” to artists [Jeff Parker<\/span>, Brian Stelfreeze<\/span>, Cully Hamner<\/span>, Adam & Alison<\/span>, Casey Jones<\/span>, Cliff Chang<\/span>, Tommy Lee Edwards<\/span> and so many others] that I didn’t take many pictures. I promise I’ll do better next year… but please understand, no one does it as well as Pat Sun<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>I was able to get some great additions to for my <\/span>Stallone sketch collection<\/span>. That’s <\/span>Mike Wieringo<\/span> pictured above. <\/span>Mike’s blog<\/span> is regular reading for me, not only because of his<\/span> great sketches<\/span>, but because of his thoughts about each sketch. When I contacted him about a Rocky<\/span> sketch he posted after seeing “Rocky Balboa”<\/span>, he said I could pick it up at Heroes<\/span>. Mike<\/span> was also selling a sketchbook and with each book purchased<\/span> fans got a free sketch<\/span>. Talk about a great deal! I picked up a sketchbook and got Mike’s take<\/span> on Jack Carter<\/span> as a bonus. [I’ll post it soon.]<\/span>In addition to the two sketches I got from Mike Wieringo<\/span>, I also was able to get one each from Rick Remender<\/span> and Kyle Baker<\/span>. Andrew Robinson<\/span> did a cool Rocky<\/span> for me before arriving at the show. So did Andy Smith<\/span><\/a>. Megan Ruiz<\/span> [Alberto’s daughter<\/span> — a true prodigy] came through with Rambo<\/span>. I also was able to get on Robin Mitchell’s sketch list<\/span> and come home with The Art of Robin Mitchell, Volume 1<\/span> and his take on Cosmo Carboni<\/span> from Paradise Alley<\/span>. I’ll post all of these sketches once I get them scanned.<\/span><\/p>\n
