A WHITE NEWSPAPER REPORTER CREATED<em> SHAFT<\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nJohn Shaft made his debut in <em>Shaft<\/em>, a novel by Ernest Tidyman. Tidyman was a reporter for\u00a0<em>The Cleveland News<\/em>,<em> The New York Post<\/em>, and <em>The New York Times<\/em> before he began writing the\u00a0<em>Shaft<\/em> series, which included seven detective stories. Along with John D.F. Black, he adapted his first <em>Shaft<\/em> book into the screenplay for the first film. He would later go on to write the screenplays for <em>The French Connection<\/em><i> (1971) <\/i>and <em>High Plains Drifter<\/em> (1973) as well as <em>Shaft\u2019s Big Score! <\/em>(1972) and the <em>Shaft <\/em>TV series (1973-1974). His work earned him an NAACP Image Award.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">3. SHAFT\u2019S MUSTACHE WAS NON-NEGOTIABLE.<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nThe Los Angeles fiasco was behind him, but Parks immediately faced another scare when he spied his star, Richard Roundtree, heading to the bathroom with a towel and razor. Producer Joel Freeman had asked him to get rid of his soon-to-be legendary mustache. Parks told Roundtree emphatically, \u201cShave it off and you\u2019re out of a job.\u201d And with that, the \u2018stache stayed in the picture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">11. THERE\u2019S A <em>SHAFT<\/em> COMIC BOOK SERIES.<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nThere hasn\u2019t been a new <em>Shaft<\/em> movie since the 2000 reboot starring Samuel L. Jackson, but Dynamite Entertainment began printing a\u00a0<em>Shaft<\/em> comic book series in 2014. The comics are penned by David F. Walker, who also published the first\u00a0<em>Shaft<\/em> novel in over 40 years this February. The latest comic series finds Shaft as a part-time consultant on a blaxploitation movie; Walker intended this meta subplot to be a commentary on \u201cclueless producers who think they have their finger on the pulse of blackness.\u201d And yes, that was an intended slam on the upcoming remake.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kristin Hunt\u00a0and Mental_Floss present 11 Complicated Facts About Shaft. \u00a0Here are three of my favorites&#8230; 1.
