\"\"<\/a>Charlton Heston<\/span> passed away yesterday at the age of 84<\/span>. Perhaps best known for his Oscar winning role<\/span> as the title character in Ben-Hur<\/em>,<\/span>\u00a0I will always remember him first as Taylor<\/span> from the Planet of the Apes<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>Don’t get me wrong, I loved Charlton Heston<\/span> in Ben-Hur<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>which was one of those event movies<\/span> back in the days before cable tv<\/span>, VCRs<\/span> [remember those] and of course DVDs<\/span>. The first time I watched<\/p>\n

Ben-Hur<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0was on a little black and white tv with my mom. I can remember my excitement during the chariot race<\/span> and my fear of the lepers<\/span>. A few years later I watched\u00a0Ben-Hur<\/em><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0for the first time on color tv at my grandparents’ house and my grandpa told me about the chariot race [and someone actually getting killed during the filming of it].<\/span><\/span>I would see Charlton Heston<\/span> pop up in movies after that, but it wasn’t until The Planet of the Apes<\/span><\/em>\u00a0[one of my favorite childhood movie experiences] that he hit a streak of movies that really made me take notice. Mr. Heston<\/span> had a small role in the sequel Beneath the Planet of the Apes<\/span><\/em>\u00a0— and there were of course starring roles in The Omega Man<\/span><\/em>\u00a0and Soylent Green<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span>Although these movies have not held up as well as my childhood memories of them, Mr. Heston <\/span> was on a roll as far as I was then concerned. You can imagine my delight when he showed up in the all-star cast of the disaster epic,\u00a0Earthquake<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n


\nDespite winning a Best Actor award<\/span>, Charlton Heston<\/span> wasn’t one of the first names that came to mind when discussing great actors<\/span>. Yet, when I think of all the movies that I’ve enjoyed that he’s appeared in from Ben Hur<\/span>\u00a0<\/em>to Tombstone<\/em>, \u00a0<\/span>you’d have to agree that he had talent enough to make him a star.<\/span><\/span>In his later years, Charlton Heston<\/span> became more known for his strict conservative<\/span> political views than his acting. This was quite a change from his liberal views in the 1950’s<\/span> and 60’s<\/span>. In 2002<\/span>, Mr. Heston<\/span> announced that he was suffering from sympton’s of\u00a0Alzheimer’s disease<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
