\"\"<\/a>I really, really wanted to like “Harsh Times.”<\/span><\/a> David Ayer<\/span> directed it. Ayer<\/span> also wrote it. Okay, you ask, “so who is David Ayer<\/span>?” He’s the talented writer<\/span> of such films as “Training Day,” “Dark Blue,” <\/span>and “The Fast and the Furious”<\/span> among others. Ayer<\/span> also directed “Street Kings”<\/span> which I really enjoyed<\/span><\/a>. So even though “Harsh Times”<\/span> starred Christian Bale, Freddy Rodriguez, Eva Longoria <\/span>and Terry Crews <\/span>[in a small role], it was Ayer<\/span> who was the major selling point for me.<\/p>\n

The Pitch: “Training Day” <\/span>meets “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”<\/span> without the comedy and where Ferris<\/span> is an over-the-edge ex-marine.<\/p>\n

The Good:<\/span> The scene when Bale & Rodriguez<\/span> attempt to sell a handgun in a Tex-Mex bar<\/span>. The tension<\/span> throughout the movie — who’s going to die?<\/p>\n

The Bad: <\/span> There’s a lack of redeeming characters<\/span>. The movie is dark, dark, dark. <\/p>\n

The Ugly:<\/span> How disappointed I am, that I didn’t like the movie more.<\/p>\n

The Summary:<\/span> “Harsh Times”<\/span><\/a> was too bleak<\/span> for me. Good director, good cast, but without characters that I could really get behind.<\/p>\n
