For years I&#8217;ve been saying that someone needs to find a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">horror host<\/span> and run a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">double feature<\/span> of <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">scary movies<\/span> late on <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Saturday<\/span> night. Although, no major network has stepped up to the plate, my buddy <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Bill Black<\/span> has released a series of dvds that fits the bill [as in black].<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem; color: var(--text-color); font-family: var(--text-font);\">Last night I watched <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">&#8220;M is for Madman&#8221;<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem; color: var(--text-color); font-family: var(--text-font);\"> the third in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Bill&#8217;s Crypt of Horror<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem; color: var(--text-color); font-family: var(--text-font);\"> series. It&#8217;s a double feature of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">&#8220;The Man Who Turned to Stone&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem; color: var(--text-color); font-family: var(--text-font);\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">&#8220;The Brute Man&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem; color: var(--text-color); font-family: var(--text-font);\"> hosted by <\/span><a style=\"color: #cc0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/profile.myspace.com\/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&amp;friendid=40172556\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Lon Madnight.<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Madnight<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem; color: var(--text-color); font-family: var(--text-font);\"> [whose name is a play on <\/span><a style=\"color: #cc0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0018097\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">&#8220;London After Midnight&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem; color: var(--text-color); font-family: var(--text-font);\"> &#8211; the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">lost, silent horror film<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem; color: var(--text-color); font-family: var(--text-font);\"> starring <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Lon Chaney<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem; color: var(--text-color); font-family: var(--text-font);\">] maintains the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">perfect balance<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem; color: var(--text-color); font-family: var(--text-font);\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">insightful trivia<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem; color: var(--text-color); font-family: var(--text-font);\"> about the movie to be seen and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">bad puns<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem; color: var(--text-color); font-family: var(--text-font);\">. He&#8217;s just what the doctor [or at least I] ordered. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">production values <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem; color: var(--text-color); font-family: var(--text-font);\">on the dvd are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">top notch<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem; color: var(--text-color); font-family: var(--text-font);\">. The films are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">crisp and clear<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem; color: var(--text-color); font-family: var(--text-font);\"> with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">excellent sound<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem; color: var(--text-color); font-family: var(--text-font);\">. The movies can be seen without the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Lon Madnight<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem; color: var(--text-color); font-family: var(--text-font);\"> openings and closings, but they&#8217;re so much fun, who&#8217;d want to miss them? Priced at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">less than twenty bucks for two remastered movies<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem; color: var(--text-color); font-family: var(--text-font);\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Lon Midnight<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem; color: var(--text-color); font-family: var(--text-font);\"> &#8212; you&#8217;d be hard pressed to find a cheaper evening of family fun.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">So let&#8217;s take a look at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: arial;\">&#8220;The Man Who Turned to Stone&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">&#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: arial;\">The Pitch: Mad scientists<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"> run a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: arial;\">woman&#8217;s reformatory<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"> and drain the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: arial;\">&#8220;bio-electrical&#8221; life force<\/span> from inmates in order to prolong their <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: arial;\">unnatural lives<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: arial;\">The Good: <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: arial;\">special effects<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"> are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: arial;\">surprisingly well done <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">for a low-budget film of this era. You&#8217;re slowly made to realize that the people in charge of the reformatory aren&#8217;t just bad, they&#8217;re&#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: arial;\">The Bad: <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">This isn&#8217;t a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: arial;\">classic horror movie <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">&#8212; it&#8217;s bad in all the right ways. The<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: arial;\"> hero<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"> kind of looks like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: arial;\">Lee Harvey Oswald<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: arial;\">The Ugly: <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">What happens when <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: arial;\">Eric<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"> doesn&#8217;t get enough <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: arial;\">&#8220;bio-electrical&#8221; life force<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: arial;\">The Summary: &#8220;The Man Who Turned to Stone&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"> isn&#8217;t a classic, but it&#8217;s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: arial;\">better than you&#8217;d expect<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"> given it&#8217;s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: arial;\">lack of budget and notoriety<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">. It&#8217;s exactly the kind of movie that works when you&#8217;re in the mood for an old time horror movie that you haven&#8217;t watched a million times.
