\"\"<\/a>Longtime ZONErs<\/span> know how much I enjoyed watching horror\/monster movies as a kid growing up in Indiana<\/span><\/a>… especially those shown<\/span><\/a> by late night horror host Sammy Terry<\/span><\/a>. For years I’ve been saying that someone needs to find a horror host<\/span> and run a double feature<\/span> of scary movies<\/span> late on Saturday<\/span> night. Although, no major network has stepped up to the plate, my buddy Bill Black<\/span> has released a series of dvds that fits the bill [as in black].<\/span><\/p>\n

Last night I watched <\/span>“M is for Madman”<\/span><\/em> the third in <\/span>Bill’s Crypt of Horror<\/span> series. It’s a double feature of <\/span>“The Man Who Turned to Stone”<\/span> and <\/span>“The Brute Man”<\/span> hosted by <\/span>Lon Madnight.<\/span><\/a> Madnight<\/span> [whose name is a play on <\/span>“London After Midnight”<\/span><\/a> – the <\/span>lost, silent horror film<\/span> starring <\/span>Lon Chaney<\/span>] maintains the <\/span>perfect balance<\/span> of <\/span>insightful trivia<\/span> about the movie to be seen and <\/span>bad puns<\/span>. He’s just what the doctor [or at least I] ordered. The <\/span>production values <\/span>on the dvd are <\/span>top notch<\/span>. The films are <\/span>crisp and clear<\/span> with <\/span>excellent sound<\/span>. The movies can be seen without the <\/span>Lon Madnight<\/span> openings and closings, but they’re so much fun, who’d want to miss them? Priced at <\/span>less than twenty bucks for two remastered movies<\/span> and <\/span>Lon Midnight<\/span> — you’d be hard pressed to find a cheaper evening of family fun.<\/span><\/p>\n

So let’s take a look at <\/span>“The Man Who Turned to Stone”<\/span>…<\/span><\/span><\/span>The Pitch: Mad scientists<\/span> run a <\/span>woman’s reformatory<\/span> and drain the <\/span>“bio-electrical” life force<\/span> from inmates in order to prolong their unnatural lives<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Good: <\/span>The <\/span>special effects<\/span> are <\/span>surprisingly well done <\/span>for a low-budget film of this era. You’re slowly made to realize that the people in charge of the reformatory aren’t just bad, they’re…<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Bad: <\/span>This isn’t a <\/span>classic horror movie <\/span>— it’s bad in all the right ways. The<\/span> hero<\/span> kind of looks like <\/span>Lee Harvey Oswald<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Ugly: <\/span>What happens when <\/span>Eric<\/span> doesn’t get enough <\/span>“bio-electrical” life force<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Summary: “The Man Who Turned to Stone”<\/span> isn’t a classic, but it’s <\/span>better than you’d expect<\/span> given it’s <\/span>lack of budget and notoriety<\/span>. It’s exactly the kind of movie that works when you’re in the mood for an old time horror movie that you haven’t watched a million times. I can’t wait to watch it with friends\/family who love scary movies.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
