\"\"<\/a>I recently watched “The Brute Man” <\/span>as the second part of the double feature dvd <\/span>“M is for Madman”<\/span>. “M is for Madman” <\/span>is the third in Bill Blacks’ Crypt of Horror<\/span> series which takes us back to the days when drive-in movies<\/span> and late night horror hosts<\/span> were two<\/span> of the things that made weekends<\/span> so much fun. <\/span>“M is for Madman”<\/span><\/span> features “The Man Who Turned to Stone”<\/span> and “The Brute Man”<\/span> hosted by Lon Madnight.<\/span><\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

\nLon Madnight<\/span> is our horror host<\/span>. He appears before and after each film to provide insightful trivia<\/span> about the movie to be seen and later leave us with some final thoughts and a chuckle or two. He’s exactly what’s needed in a horror host<\/span>. The production values <\/span>on the dvd are top notch<\/span>. The films are crisp and clear<\/span> with excellent sound<\/span>. The movies can be seen without the Lon Madnight<\/span> openings and closings, but they’re so much fun, who’d want to miss them? Priced at less than twenty bucks for two remastered movies<\/span> and Lon Midnight<\/span> — you’d be hard pressed to find a cheaper evening of family fun.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I reviewed “The Man Who Turned to Stone” here<\/a><\/span>, so let’s take a look at “The Brute Man”<\/span>…<\/span><\/p>\n

The Pitch: “Frankenstein” <\/span>meets “The Dark Man”<\/span> set in the 1940s<\/span>. A star high school football player is left disfigured by a practical joke and years later comes back for revenge.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Good: <\/span>The movie moves at a brisk pace<\/span>. All of the cliches of the genre can be found here: spinning newspapers<\/span> with headlines updating us on what we’ve just seen, the blind girl<\/span> who doesn’t know she’s harboring the killer<\/span>, a huge disfigured monster<\/span> who walks the streets at night and easily escapes the cops after each murder… and there’s even some comic relief <\/span>with the chief of police and city commissioners. And let’s not forget Rondo Hattan<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Bad: <\/span>How The Creeper <\/span>kills his victims – he breaks their backs<\/span>!<\/span><\/p>\n

The Ugly: The Creeper.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Summary: <\/span>There are a couple of things that will make this a must own dvd<\/span> for fans of the genre:<\/span><\/p>\n

1] <\/span> It was produced by Universal Pictures<\/span>, so completists will want it for their collection to place along side “Frankenstein,” “Dracula,” <\/span>etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

2]<\/span> It stars Rondo Hatton<\/span> as the monster<\/span>. Hattan<\/span> suffered from <\/span>acromegaly<\/span>, a disease which caused abnormal growth of his hands, feet, and face. Because of the <\/span>disfigurement<\/span> caused by the disease<\/span>, makeup wasn’t needed for <\/span>Hattan<\/span>. Most reports attribute the onset of this disease to <\/span>Hattan’s exposure<\/span> to <\/span>mustard gas<\/span> in <\/span>World War I<\/span>. <\/span>Hattan<\/span> is somewhat of a <\/span>legend<\/span> among <\/span>horror buffs<\/span> and even has a <\/span>horror award<\/span><\/a> named after him!<\/span><\/p>\n

Trivia:<\/span> <\/span>Janelle Johson <\/b>had a supporting role in the film. Her biggest claim to fame is probably that she is the mother of <\/span>Mickey Dolenz <\/span>of <\/span>The Monkees<\/span>!<\/span><\/p>\n
