But what to watch? How about one starring <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Basil <\/span>[Sherlock Holmes] <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Rathbone<\/span> [as the mad scientist], <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Lon<\/span> [The Wolfman] <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Chaney, Jr.<\/span> [as one of the monsters], <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Bela<\/span> [Dracula] <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Lugosi<\/span> [as Rathbone&#8217;s assistant], <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">John<\/span> [Dracula] <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Carradine<\/span> [as a madman] and <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Tor<\/span> [&#8220;Plan 9 from Outer Space] <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Johnson<\/span> [as another monster]? Yep,<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> &#8220;The Black Sleep&#8221;<\/span> fit the bill perfectly!<\/span><\/span>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">What, you&#8217;ve never heard of <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">&#8220;The Black Sleep&#8221;<\/span>? I wouldn&#8217;t be surprised. Unless you&#8217;re a real aficionado of the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">horror genre<\/span>, you probably haven&#8217;t. I guess that&#8217;s what makes it a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">cult film<\/span>. The sad thing is, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">&#8220;The Black Sleep&#8221;<\/span> is one of the better <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">low-budget 50&#8217;s horror films<\/span>. So let&#8217;s take a look at it&#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">The Pitch:<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">&#8220;Frankenstein&#8221;<\/span> meets <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">&#8220;The Island of Doctor Moreau.&#8221;<\/span> A <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">mad scientist<\/span> [<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Rathbone<\/span>] frames a former student [<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Herbert Rudley<\/span>] for murder and then helps him escape the gallows. In return <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Rudley<\/span> must help <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Rathbone<\/span> with his <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">evil experiments<\/span> which turn his subjects into <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">monsters<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">The Good:<\/span> The movie is introduced by <a style=\"color: #cc0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/profile.myspace.com\/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&amp;friendid=40172556\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Lon Madnight<\/span><\/a>! Having <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Lugosi<\/span> [in his final role] along with <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Chaney, Carradine, Johnson <\/span>and <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Rathbone<\/span> sharing screen-time is a hoot for any <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">horror fan<\/span>. <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Akim Tamiroff<\/span> as <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Odo the Gypsy<\/span> steals every scene he&#8217;s in. The screenplay is more complex than most of the genre &#8212; we have the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">mad scientist<\/span> performing evil experiments, but he does so in hopes of learning a way to save his dying wife &#8212; we have a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">framed hero<\/span> who must solve a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">murder mystery<\/span> in order to clear his name &#8212; we have <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">monsters<\/span> chained in hidden cells below the castle, but they are victims of <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Rathbone&#8217;s experiments<\/span> &#8212; at the same time the police are following leads leading to&#8230; a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">great climax<\/span> with the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">monsters<\/span> breaking free just as&#8230; ah, but that would be giving it away! [Be sure to keep watching after &#8220;The End&#8221; credit appears &#8212; there&#8217;s an <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">added bonus<\/span>!]<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">The Bad:<\/span> What the experiments do to the subjects! Poor <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Bela<\/span> is regulated to the role of a mute assistant &#8212; he was in terrible health in his final days. The <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">hero&#8217;s name<\/span> is <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Gordon Ramsay.\u00a0 <\/span>(Yep, reminded me of the Hell&#8217;s Kitchen guy.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">The Ugly:<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Tor Johnson<\/span>, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Lon Chaney<\/span> and the rest of the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">monsters<\/span>! Also there&#8217;s a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">great scare<\/span> with a beautiful girl who&#8217;s suddenly revealed to be one of the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">monsters<\/span>!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">In Summary:<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> &#8220;The Black Sleep&#8221;<\/span> is a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">welcome addition<\/span> to any <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">horror fan&#8217;s library<\/span>. The transfer is crisp and clean with excellent sound. The disc also <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">includes trailers<\/span> for other films in the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">AC DVD library<\/span>\u00a0as well as the first chapter of a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Blackhawk<\/span> cliffhanger serial. <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> &#8220;The Black Sleep&#8221;<\/span> is another winner from <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Bill Black<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/craigzablo.com\/wp-admin\/edit.php?post_type=post\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last night I was in the mood for an old-time horror movie.
