For this post, I&#8217;m going to make <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">an exception<\/span> and write briefly about something out of the norm.<\/p>\n<p>On <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Friday evening<\/span>, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">one of my students<\/span> who plays on our <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">high school football team<\/span> suffered a terrible injury.  His <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">neck was broken<\/span> while making a tackle.  He was <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">rushed to the hospital<\/span> and <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">surgery<\/span> started late that evening and went into the early hours of the next day.  His <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">mother, little brother<\/span> and a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">couple of close friends<\/span> were joined by the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">head football coach<\/span>, the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">head and assistant basketball coaches<\/span>, our <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">athletic trainer<\/span>, our <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">principal<\/span> and me.  As the minutes slowly ticked off and the surgery continued, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">his older brother<\/span> [he&#8217;s going to college out of town], a few more <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">close friends<\/span> and a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">former football coach<\/span> arrived.  At about <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">1:30AM<\/span>, a doctor came out and said that <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">surgery was going well<\/span>, that <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">all signs were good<\/span> and they&#8217;d be operating for another hour or so.  After surgery, the student was admitted to the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>This morning <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">all signs continue to be good<\/span>.  The student has <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">full use<\/span> of his arms and legs.  He still has a ways to go to be fully healed, but the worst should be over.<\/p>\n<p>The reason that I wanted to post about this is that <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">sometimes we forget <\/span>about <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">what&#8217;s really important in life<\/span>.  We also forget about <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">how quickly events can change<\/span>, sometimes forever.  It <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">shouldn&#8217;t take a catastrophic accident<\/span> to <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">remind us of what&#8217;s important<\/span>&#8230; to <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">let those we care about know it<\/span>&#8230; to <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">appreciate the blessings that we have<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it can be something as simple as a blog post.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I try to keep my ZONE posts geared to fun stuff [movies, television, novels, comic books, art, etc.].
