Breakstone while looking for some booze finds evidence that his wife has been working as a hooker.\u00a0 Still half drunk, Breakstone grabs his gun and jumps on his motorcyle to find her.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His wife is with one of her best clients, a musician under contract to mobsters.\u00a0 Suddenly a man busts in and kills the musician.\u00a0 Breakstone&#8217;s wife barely escapes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Breakstone is on the hunt for his wife.\u00a0 The killer and the cops are also looking for her.\u00a0 Before the night is over she will be found.\u00a0 Who will get to her first?\u00a0 And will it matter?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I&#8217;m a big fan of Howard Chaykin stories and art.\u00a0 Often Chaykin doesn&#8217;t hold back on the adult situations in his tales and this is one of those. If that&#8217;s offensive, this yarn isn&#8217;t for you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Midnight of the Soul<\/strong> has a lot going on besides the hunt for Breakstone&#8217;s wife.\u00a0 There is also the mystery of why the musician was murdered.\u00a0 Plus Breakstone&#8217;s foggy memory of the incident that left 3 people dead and nearly killed him.\u00a0 All will be resolved before the night is over.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I like that the action takes place over the course of one night.\u00a0 As Breakstone tracks down his wife his journey takes him across the city to strip bars, diners, and jazz clubs.\u00a0 Along the way we meet a wide variety of characters some who are also looking for Breakstone&#8217;s wife.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Chaykin is at the top of his game with the art in <strong>Midnight of the Soul<\/strong>.\u00a0 Jesus Aburtov&#8217;s colors enhance the story without drawing attention to his work in a &#8220;look at these hues&#8221; sort of way.\u00a0 Often I think Chaykin&#8217;s art works best in black and white, but not this time!\u00a0 The story reminds me of an old movie with a modern sensibility (or an &#8220;R&#8221; rating).\u00a0 Chaykin&#8217;s heroes, or in this case, anithero, don&#8217;t always do the noble thing, but they do what is right for their character.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2020\/z072020zview_midnightofthesoul_panel.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"443\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Rating:<br \/>\n<\/strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/logo\/zview_b.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"100\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Midnight of the Soul is a paperback that collects the five issue mini-series published by Image\u00a0Comics.
