{"id":24457,"date":"2020-08-24T13:24:48","date_gmt":"2020-08-24T17:24:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=24457"},"modified":"2021-05-22T09:51:12","modified_gmt":"2021-05-22T13:51:12","slug":"the-unholy-wife-z-view","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=24457","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;The Unholy Wife&#8221; \/ Z-View"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2020\/z082420zview_theunholywife.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"750\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The Unholy Wife<\/em><\/strong> (1957)<\/p>\n<p>Director:<strong> John Farrow<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Screenplay: \u00a0<strong>Jonathan Latimer<\/strong> (based on a story by <strong>William Durkee<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Stars:\u00a0<strong> Diana Dors, Rod Steiger<\/strong> and Tom<strong> Tryon.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Pitch: &#8220;We&#8217;ve got Diana Dors, let&#8217;s star her as a femm fatale in a film noir!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tagline:<em> HALF-ANGEL&#8230;&#8230;HALF-DEVIL, she made him HALF-A-MAN! &#8230;she flaunted his hopes, taunted his dreams, turned his peaceful valley into a volcano of seething passions that even murder could not stem! <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Overview:\u00a0 Beware of Spoilers\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The Unholy Wife<\/em> is a little known, under-rated film noir released in 1957 staring Diana Dors and Rod Steiger.\u00a0 Steiger plays Paul, a war vet who runs the gigantic family vineyard.\u00a0 A chance encounter with a beautiful woman leads Paul to fall in love with her.\u00a0 And that love sends him down the path to death and ruin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sound familiar?\u00a0 It should because its the outline for all great film noirs.\u00a0 <em>Double Indemnity<\/em>?\u00a0 Check.\u00a0 <em>The Postman Always Rings Twice<\/em>?\u00a0 Check.\u00a0 Now, I&#8217;m not saying that<em> The Unholy Wife<\/em> meets the gold standard of those two classics, but it&#8217;s definitely coming from the same mine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dors plays Phyllis a bleach-bottle blonde bombshell (say that three times fast) that steals Paul Hochen&#8217;s heart.\u00a0 Despite the warning signs (some from Phyllis herself), Paul marries her. He then brings Phyllis and her young son home to live on his huge vineyard estate.\u00a0 It isn&#8217;t long before Phyllis is having an affair and plotting to set her husband up for murder.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The Unholy Wife<\/em> reminds me of a lesser known Gold Medal book you&#8217;d find on the paperback racks back in the 50s.\u00a0 I say that as a good thing.\u00a0 Even <em>The Unholy Wife<\/em> movie poster looks like it could have served as a Gold Medal cover!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I like everything about <em>The Unholy Wife<\/em>.\u00a0 Dors is excellent as the beautiful, heartless seductress.\u00a0 Steiger is convincing (and doesn&#8217;t overact) as the nice guy led astray.\u00a0 Tom Tryon doesn&#8217;t have much to do, but is just right as Dors&#8217; lover.\u00a0 The movie was made in Technicolor and the process and colors make it look like a lurid paperback cover come to life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you&#8217;re a fan of film noir then you should really enjoy <em>The Unholy Wife<\/em>.
