Her <\/span><a style=\"color: #cc0000; font-family: arial;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0457755\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">career spanned sixty years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"> and made her an <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">international star<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">Born to poor parents [a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">mother <\/span>of <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">African-American\/Cherokee<\/span> heritage and a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">white father<\/span>] in <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">1927<\/span>,<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> Eartha<\/span> was sent to live with relatives when her mother&#8217;s new husband refused to have a mixed child in the house. <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Eartha&#8217;s big break<\/span> came in <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">1946<\/span> when she auditioned and won a spot as a dancer with the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Dunham dance group<\/span>. This in turn led to work on <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Broadway<\/span> and later a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Paris nightclub<\/span> where she was spotted by<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> Orson Welles<\/span> who called her the &#8220;most exciting woman in the world&#8221; and cast her in his <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Paris<\/span> stage production of <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">&#8220;Faust.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">From there her career really took off with a recording contract [<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Eartha<\/span> could sing in several languages] and songs such as <\/span>&#8220;I Want to be Evil&#8221;<span style=\"font-family: arial;\"> and the classic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">&#8220;Santa, Baby.&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"> At a time when women of color were often seen on television as maids and secretaries, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Ms. Kitt<\/span> had a reoccurring role as the sexy <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Catwoman<\/span> on the popular tv series <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Batman<\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">In <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">1968<\/span>, her career in the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">US<\/span> came to a screeching halt. <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Ms. Kitt<\/span>, along with several other important ladies of the time had been invited to a luncheon at the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">White House<\/span> hosted by <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">President Johnson&#8217;s wife<\/span>. They were there to discuss youth crime. <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Ms. Kitt<\/span> brought up the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Viet Nam war<\/span> and the unrest it was causing among young people, and <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Mrs. Johnson<\/span> took offense. The incident made the papers and suddenly <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Ms. Kitt <\/span>found herself blacklisted. So she went overseas where she continued to perform until her return to <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Broadway<\/span> in <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">1974<\/span>. <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Jimmy Carter<\/span> invited her back to the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">White House<\/span> in <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">1978<\/span>. In <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2006<\/span>, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">President Bush<\/span> had her back once again, this time to light the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">National Christmas tree<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"> <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Ms. Kitt <\/span>never retired. She is one of the few entertainers to earn nominations for <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Emmy<\/span>, [she won two and was nominated for three], <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Grammy<\/span> [nominated twice] and <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Tony<\/span> [nominatied twice] awards.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Ms. Kitt<\/span> leaves behind a daughter and two grandchildren.
