{"id":28146,"date":"2021-09-03T09:28:55","date_gmt":"2021-09-03T13:28:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=28146"},"modified":"2021-09-03T09:28:55","modified_gmt":"2021-09-03T13:28:55","slug":"the-best-films-by-debut-directors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=28146","title":{"rendered":"The Best Films by Debut Directors!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2021\/z090321debut_directors.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Liam Gaughan at \/Film compiled his list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slashfilm.com\/572140\/great-directors-who-havent-won-oscars\/\">The 15 Best Debut Films From Directors<\/a>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a good list and so I decided to play along.\u00a0 Here are my top 5 (in alphabetical order) selected from Gaughan&#8217;s 15 plus three that didn&#8217;t make his list that would have made mine&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Cohen Brothers: <em>Blood Simple<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 What an amazing debut that kickstarted a career that has spanned over three decades in ever changing genres.\u00a0 I drove over 100 miles round trip to see <em>Blood Simple<\/em> when it first came out since it wasn&#8217;t showing anywhere near me.\u00a0 I wasn&#8217;t disappointed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Huston, John: <em>The Maltese Falcon<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 George Raft turned down the role of Sam Spade because he didn&#8217;t want to work with a first time director!\u00a0 What a mistake.\u00a0 We&#8217;re better off for it, because Bogart makes the perfect lead.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Mann, Michael: <em>Thief.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 Mann&#8217;s first outing in the director&#8217;s chair shows the foundation for his movie trademarks: night scenes, music and noir.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Romero, George: <em>Night of the Living Dead<\/em>.\u00a0<\/strong> How many directors have directed a debut film that generated multi-billion dollars across movies, books, toys, comics, posters, t-shirts and more?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Welles, Orson: <em>Citizen Kane<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0 Orson Welles&#8217; <em>Citizen Kane<\/em> is arguably the best, most revered first time director&#8217;s debut of all.\u00a0 Sadly, Welles never rose to those heights again (who could?), but he did go on to direct and star in other great films.<\/p>\n<p>+++<\/p>\n<p>The three debut directors that didn&#8217;t make Gaughan&#8217;s list but that would have made mine are&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Hill, Walter: <em>Hard Times<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0 Straight out of the shoot, Hill directed Charles Bronson and James Coburn in a depression era macho film that had heart.\u00a0 \u00a0He would follow<em> Hard Times<\/em> with <em>The Driver, The Warriors, The Long Riders, Southern Comfort, 48 hrs,<\/em> and <em>Streets of Fire<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>McQuarrie, Christopher: <em>Way of the Gun<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 While <em>Way of the Gun<\/em> isn&#8217;t for everyone, those that love it, LOVE IT.\u00a0 McQuarrie wouldn&#8217;t direct another film for over a decade until he helmed <em>Jack Reacher<\/em> starring Tom Cruise.\u00a0 McQuarrie then went on to direct Cruise in three <em>Mission Impossible<\/em> films (two still to be released).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stahelski, Chad: <em>John Wick<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0 After Stahelski&#8217;s debut, action films took on a new look aka &#8220;John Wick&#8221;
