Sometimes, it’s not if you win or lose, but HOW you win or lose.\u00a0 The results of the co-main event fights at tonight’s UFC 97<\/strong> prove the truth of that saying.<\/p>\n

Chuck Liddell<\/strong> was knocked out in the first round by Shogun Rua<\/strong>.\u00a0 The fight didn’t last long, but was fast paced with both fighters throwing bombs.\u00a0 Liddell<\/strong> was pressing the action and landing some good shots.\u00a0 At one point Rua<\/strong> almost put in Liddell<\/strong> in a leglock, but Chuck<\/strong> escaped and continued to move forward.\u00a0 Suddenly Rua<\/strong> landed a hook and Chuck<\/strong> went down.\u00a0 Rua<\/strong> followed and started dropping hammerfists until the ref stepped in to stop it.\u00a0 Although Liddell <\/strong>lost, the crowd was still cheering him when he returned, beer in hand to watch the main event.\u00a0 Later it was announced that Chuck Liddell<\/strong> was retiring.<\/p>\n

Anderson Silva<\/strong>, on the other hand, easily defeated Thales Leites<\/strong> in a fight that should have exciting.\u00a0 Both men are skilled martial artists and were fighting for the title.\u00a0 The fight went the distance and before the first round was over, fans were booing.\u00a0 Leites<\/strong> had no intention of standing and trading punches with Silva <\/strong>so he would intentionally drop to his back each time it looked as if a serious exchange was about to take place.\u00a0 For his part, Silva<\/strong> refused to go to the ground with Leites<\/strong>.\u00a0 Imagine watching THAT for five rounds.\u00a0 Silva<\/strong> ended up with the unanimous decision and a recording breaking streak of wins<\/strong>… a many, if not most of the fans in attendance booing him.<\/p>\n

Liddell<\/strong> has had a great career.\u00a0 He’s still a fan favorite and will continue to work with the UFC<\/strong> even if he never steps into the octogan to fight again.\u00a0 If\u00a0 Liddell<\/strong> did decide to fight again, fans would turn out knowing that win or lose, they’d see a plenty of action.\u00a0\u00a0 Silva<\/strong> is perhaps the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world<\/strong>.\u00a0 Despite the longest win streak in UFC history<\/strong> and being the Middleweight champ<\/strong>, it’s going to be hard to get fans excited about his next fight because sometimes it’s not if you win or lose, but HOW you go about doing it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
