Shot so that the audience sees everything from Marlowe’s perspective, it plays like a modern video game with little action.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

4. James Garner, <\/b><\/span>Marlowe <\/b><\/i><\/span>(1969) <\/b><\/span>\u2013 <\/b><\/i><\/span>Garner isn’t a bad Marlowe plus we get Bruce Lee too! <\/span> <\/b><\/i>I’d have like to have seen Garner play Marlowe again. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

He’s not in his prime, but Mitchum at any age is a winner. Plus we get Sly Stallone in <\/span>Farewell, My Lovely.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n<\/b><\/span>The Big Sleep <\/b><\/i><\/span>(1946)<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/td>\n

2. Dick Powell, <\/b><\/span>Murder, My Sweet (1944) <\/b><\/i><\/span>\u2013 <\/b><\/i><\/span>Powell was best known for lighthearted musicals prior to this. Surprisingly he makes a cool Marlowe!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

1. Humphrey Bogart, <\/b><\/span>The Big Sleep <\/b><\/i><\/span>(1946) <\/b><\/span>\u2013 <\/b><\/i><\/span>Bogart is easily my favorite Marlowe. If only he had made more<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Although Doherty limited his rankings to the movie Marlowes, I want to make mention of <\/span>Philip Marlowe, Private Eye (1983 – 1986)<\/b><\/i><\/span>, a series that ran for 3 years on HBO. Powers Boothe played Marlowe. It’s been decades since I saw the series, but I remember it fondly. I need to revisit it.<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
