The Plot\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\nChance (Sellers) is a simpleminded man who never learned to read or write.\u00a0 Chance has lived his whole life without ever leaving the property of the old man who raised him.\u00a0 Although Chance is an excellent gardener, he has learned most of what he knows from watching television (which he dearly loves).\u00a0 When the old man dies, Chance is forced to leave the old man’s property.<\/p>\n
For the first time he ventures out into the world.\u00a0 When Ben Rand’s limousine accidentally strikes Chance, Rand’s wife, Eve (MacLaine) demands that Chance is brought back to their mansion.\u00a0 On the ride back, Eve mishears “Chance the gardener” and thinks that Chance’s name is Chauncey Gardiner.”\u00a0 Eve introduces Chauncey to her much older and sickly husband, Ben.\u00a0 Ben takes a liking to Chauncey.\u00a0 Ben misunderstands Chauncey and thinks that he’s a businessman who has fallen on hard times.\u00a0 As they discuss business, Ben is impressed with Chauncey’s straight talk and comparisons of the economy to taking care of a garden.<\/p>\n
Ben is a close advisor to the President of the United States. He plans to introduce Chauncey to the leader of the free world.\u00a0 What could go wrong.\u00a0 (And here’s a hint, nothing!)<\/p>\n
Thoughts (beware of spoilers)<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\nBeing There<\/em> is Hal Ashby’s highest rated film according to the IMDb.\u00a0 It’s also my favorite Hal Ashby film.\u00a0 Ashby is supported by a great cast.\u00a0 Peter Sellers is wonderful as Chance.\u00a0 He received a nomination for a Best Actor Oscar<\/em> for his role.\u00a0 Melvyn Douglas also received an Academy Award nomination<\/em> for Best Supporting Actor<\/em> (and he won)!\u00a0 Shirley MacLaine, Jack Warden, Richard Dysart and Richard Basehart (in his last feature film role) are all excellent.<\/p>\nBeing There\u00a0<\/em>is a comedy with heart that also comments on modern life.\u00a0 There’s an underlying message that may be different for each viewer, but the film leaves the audience with something to think about.\u00a0 I first saw Being There<\/em> in 1980 and wondered how it would hold up.\u00a0 I’m happy to report it’s as wonderful as I remembered.<\/p>\nBeing There<\/b>\u00a0<\/em>(1979) rates 5 of 5 stars.<\/span><\/p>\n![\"\"](\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/logo\/zview_a.png\")
