Fences <\/em><\/strong>(2016)<\/span><\/p>\n Director: Denzel Washington<\/strong><\/p>\n Screenplay: August Wilson <\/strong>based on his play Fences<\/em> Stars: Denzel Washington<\/strong>, Viola Davis, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Jovan Adepo, Russell Hornsby, Tagline:\u00a0 Some people build fences to keep people out – and other people build fences to keep people in.<\/em><\/p>\n The Plot\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n Troy Maxson (Washington) is a bitter, angry, 56 year old black man.\u00a0 Once a talented baseball player, Troy was never given a chance to play in the big leagues due to his race.\u00a0 Then World War II came.\u00a0 Now that Troy is older, the color-barrier in baseball has broken.\u00a0 But Troy is too old to play.\u00a0 So he makes his living as a garbage collector.\u00a0 Even there Troy see discrimination.\u00a0 All the drivers are white.\u00a0 All the workers doing the heavy lifting are black.<\/p>\n Troy’s wife, Rose (Davis) sees times are starting to change.\u00a0 Cory (Adepo), Troy and Rose’s son, is a bright student and talented football player.\u00a0 A college is interested in giving Cory a scholarship, but Troy won’t sign the paperwork.\u00a0 He wants Cory to get educated in a job that will always provide an income.<\/p>\n Troy sees barriers everywhere and is bitter about how life has treated him, never realizing that he is building barriers for himself and his family as well.\u00a0 Despite Troy’s flaws, Rose loves him.\u00a0 Sadly Troy’s choices are going to have terrible consequences for his family and friends.<\/p>\n Thoughts (beware of spoilers)<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n Fences <\/em><\/strong>(2016) was honored at the Academy Awards:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n Academy Award Wins:<\/strong><\/p>\n Academy Award Nominations:<\/strong><\/p>\n “Fences”<\/em> was first a Broadway play.\u00a0 It opened in 1987 and went on to win Tony Awards<\/em> for Best Play, Best Actor<\/em> (James Earl Jones), and Best Featured Actress<\/em> (Mary Alice).\u00a0 “Fences”<\/em> was revived in 2010.\u00a0 It won Tony Awards<\/em> for Best Revival of a Play, Best Actor<\/em> (Denzel Washington), and Best Actress<\/em> (Viola Davis).\u00a0 All five adult actors from the revival reprise their roles in the film.<\/p>\n Although August Wilson is the only credited screenwriter for the film, Denzel Washington, Spike Lee and Tony Kushner did uncredited work.\u00a0 They didn’t want their names on the credits to insure that Wilson alone received any writing honors or awards.<\/p>\n Denzel Washing and Viola Davis were rightfully nominated for Academy Awards.\u00a0 Their roles in Fences<\/em> may be their best performances ever.\u00a0 Everyone in the supporting cast is wonderful.<\/p>\n It was fun to see Saniyya Sidney as a very young girl.\u00a0 Sidney would go on to co-star in The Passage<\/em> a few years later.<\/p>\n Fences <\/em><\/strong>(2016) rates 5 of 5 stars.<\/span><\/p>\n
