{"id":34128,"date":"2023-10-16T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-16T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=34128"},"modified":"2023-10-17T07:27:37","modified_gmt":"2023-10-17T11:27:37","slug":"touch-of-evil-1958-adapted-directed-and-starring-orson-welles-starring-charlton-heston-janet-leigh-z-view","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=34128","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Touch of Evil (1958)&#8221; adapted, directed and starring Orson Welles, starring Charlton Heston &#038; Janet Leigh \/ Z-View"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2023\/z101623zview_touchofevil.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"770\" \/><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em style=\"font-size: inherit; color: var(--text-color); font-family: var(--text-font);\">Touch of Evil <\/em><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: inherit; color: var(--text-color); font-family: var(--text-font);\">(1958)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Director: <strong>Orson Welles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Screenwriter: <strong>Orson Welles <\/strong>based on<strong> Badge of Evil <\/strong>by<strong> Whit Masterson<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cast: <strong>Charlton Heston, Orson Welles, Janet Leigh, Joseph Calleia, Akim Tamiroff, Ray Collins, Dennis Weaver, Valentin de Vargas, Mort Mills, Victor Millan,Harry Shannon, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Mercedes McCambridge, Joseph Cotton <\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Marlene Dietrich<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tagline: <em>THE STRANGEST VENGEANCE EVER PLANNED! <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The Plot\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Miguel &#8220;Mike&#8221; Vargas (Heston) and his new bride, Susan (Leigh) are visiting a small Mexican\/American border town.\u00a0 Mike is a Mexican Special Prosecutor.\u00a0 Susan is an American.\u00a0 Their honeymoon is cut short when a car bomb explodes killing two people.\u00a0 Although the explosion took place on the US side, the bomb was planted while the car was in Mexico.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mike tells Susan to go back to their hotel while he assists with the initial investigation.\u00a0 Hank Quinlan (Welles), the local police Captain, arrives and takes over the investigation.\u00a0 Quinlan is a recovering alcoholic, and a bigot with a bad attitude.\u00a0 In short order, Quinlan has a suspect.\u00a0 He&#8217;s a Mexican married to the daughter of one of the victims.\u00a0 It looks like an open and shut case when two sticks of dynamite are found in a shoebox.\u00a0 What Quinlan didn&#8217;t know is that Mike had accidentally knocked the shoebox over minutes before.\u00a0 The box was empty.\u00a0 Mike accuses Quinlan of setting the kid up.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meanwhile, Susan is stopped before she gets to the hotel.\u00a0 Her husband is prosecuting a drug case against a major Mexican crime family.\u00a0 &#8220;Uncle&#8221; Joe Grandi attempts to scare Susan and sends her to the hotel with a message for Mike to drop the case.\u00a0 Uncle Grandi learns that Mike won&#8217;t back down and that Mike has made an enemy of Quinlan.\u00a0 Grandi approaches Quinlan and suggests a partnership.\u00a0 They&#8217;ll kidnap Susan and force Mike to do their bidding.<\/p>\n<p>Of course things don&#8217;t go as planned for anyone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong style=\"font-size: inherit; color: var(--text-color); font-family: var(--text-font);\"><strong style=\"font-size: inherit; color: var(--text-color); font-family: var(--text-font);\">Thoughts (beware of spoilers)<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Touch of Evil<\/em> gets better with every viewing.\u00a0 If someone preferred it over <em>Citizen Kane<\/em>, I wouldn&#8217;t argue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Janet Leigh is best known for her role in <em>Psycho<\/em>.\u00a0 She shows a wider range here and if Norman Bates saw how sexy her character is, his head would explode.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Welles is the powerhouse behind <em>Touch of Evil<\/em>.\u00a0 He adapted the novel and made changes to improve the story.\u00a0 He starred in and directed the film.\u00a0 When Universal Pictures locked him out of the editing booth, Welles submitted a 58 page memo of suggestions to improve the cut.\u00a0 Decades later that happened.\u00a0 The restored version won several awards and a spot in the National Film Registry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Heston and Welles have a great supporting cast.\u00a0 Akim Tamiroff as Uncle Joe Grandi is both funny and scary. Welles wanted Dennis Weaver to improvise.\u00a0 Weaver took that to heart.\u00a0 His character is all over the place&#8230; and I mean that in a good way.\u00a0 Zsa Zsa Gabor shows up in a blink-and-you-might-miss-her cameo.\u00a0 While you can have eyes wide open and miss Joseph Cotton&#8217;s.\u00a0 For Mercedes McCambridge&#8217;s role, she dyed her hair, adopted an accent and rough look.
