The Devil on Trial <\/strong><\/em>(2023)<\/p>\n Director:\u00a0 Chris Holt<\/strong><\/p>\n Written by: \u00a0Chris Holt<\/strong><\/p>\n Tagline: Did the Devil Do It?<\/em><\/p>\n The Story:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n In 1981, Arne Johnson stabbed Alan Bono to death.\u00a0 Bono was Johnson’s landlord and had, in the past, dated Johnson’s girlfriend.\u00a0 Although there was no doubt that Johnson was the murderer, he claimed he didn’t remember doing it.\u00a0 When the case went to trial, his defense was that he was possessed by the devil\/a demon and therefore wasn’t responsible.<\/p>\n This documentary explores the foundation for that defense and the result of the trial.<\/p>\n In 1980, Arne Johnson was dating Debbie Glatzel.\u00a0 Some of Debbie’s family believed that her younger brother, David was possessed by the devil.\u00a0 On more than one occasion David had to be held down by family members (and Arne) while David cursed, screamed and convulsed.\u00a0 David’s behavior was extreme enough that his mother contacted Ed and Lorraine Warren.\u00a0 The Warrens were famous for their involvement in The Amityville Murders.\u00a0 The Warrens assisted David’s mother in getting the church to conduct an exorcism.\u00a0 During the procedure, as David was struggling, Arne reportedly yelled at the demon, “Leave this little kid alone.\u00a0 Take on me.\u00a0 I’m here.”<\/p>\n So when Arne killed David, he asserted that the devil\/demon had made him do it.\u00a0 This documentary uses actual voice recordings. archival footage, home movies and actor recreations to recount the story.<\/p>\n Thoughts (beware of spoilers)<\/strong><\/p>\n While Arne wanted to use the “the devil made me do it” defense, he never got to.\u00a0 The judge ruled that “possession” was not a valid defense.\u00a0 He didn’t allow it.\u00a0 Arne ended up being found guilty of manslaughter.<\/p>\n Now to David Glatzel.\u00a0 Some of David’s family believed that he was possessed.\u00a0 One of David’s brothers said it was an act.\u00a0 He said that during one of David’s sessions while cursing, hitting and yelling, David’s father came into the room.\u00a0 Father grabbed David and slapped him.\u00a0 Dad told David to shut up and sit in a chair.\u00a0 The brother said, “The devil did as he was told”.\u00a0 In other words, it was an act.<\/p>\n David’s mother was a religious woman.\u00a0 She may have believed that David was possessed at the start.\u00a0 By the time the Warrens got involved, it seemed to be more about fame and the money. Also near the end of the documentary a sick allegation against the mother is made.\u00a0 I won’t give it away, but if true indicates mom had serious issues of her own.<\/p>\n As to the Warrens, this film puts them in a very bad light.\u00a0 They took advantage of David’s family.\u00a0 The Warrens kept almost all of the money off book and movie deals in regard to David’s story.\u00a0 Money that had been promised to the Glatzel family.\u00a0 If you’ve seen The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It<\/em>, that’s the Glatzel family’s story.<\/p>\n The Devil on Trial<\/em> leaves it to viewers to determine if the possessions were real or not,\u00a0 There’s evidence that could support whatever you decide.\u00a0 As to the actions of the Warrens, the evidence points to them not being on the up and up.<\/p>\n The Devil on Trial (2023) Director:\u00a0 Chris Holt Written by: \u00a0Chris Holt Tagline: Did the Devil Do It?
