The Plot\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jim (Cryer) and Julia (Spencer) are divorced.\u00a0 Rather than have the kids move back and forth between parents, the parents have decided the children will stay in the same house and they parents will move in during their periods of custody.\u00a0 Matters are complicated when Julia gets engaged to Trey Taylor, the super rich owner of the Boston Celtics.<\/p>\n

Let the hijinks begin.<\/p>\n

Thoughts (beware of spoilers)\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

I tuned in because of Jon Cryer.\u00a0 I stuck around because it sometimes takes a show an episode or two to get going.<\/p>\n

Episode One was bad.\u00a0 One of the kids’ goldfish dies.\u00a0 There’s a lot of drama about how to best approach this. They ultimately get a new goldfish to spare the child’s feelings. Turns out the kid doesn’t get upset over the fish’s death.\u00a0 She’s upset over the divorce.\u00a0 The parents apologize to her and everyone goes to a Celtics game.<\/p>\n

Episode Two was bad.\u00a0 Julia invites her fiance, Trey to spend the night while she is watching the kids.\u00a0 Jim is upset because according to the “divorce constitution” that they wrote, he should have been consulted.\u00a0 They argue. Jim ultimately agrees to Trey staying over.\u00a0 Then Trey can’t sleep on the mattress that used to be shared by Julia and Jim.\u00a0 So he buys a new mattress.\u00a0 Constitutional crisis!\u00a0 Then they settle that and painting the bedroom becomes an issue.\u00a0 You guessed it.\u00a0 Constitutional crisis.<\/p>\n

More like series crisis, says I.\u00a0 I’ll try one more episode.<\/p>\n

Episode 3 was bad.\u00a0 Jim has had the kids for a week on his own.\u00a0 When Julia returns, Jim heads home.\u00a0 She learns the daughter doesn’t like math and earned a C- on her test.\u00a0 Her son is hooked on a violent video game.\u00a0 She thinks that her kids are going to be failures.\u00a0 She tries some things that don’t work.\u00a0 She calls Jim back and he doesn’t see the problem.\u00a0 Trey gets involved.\u00a0 The kids end up concerned that there will be no future because of climate change.<\/p>\n

Strike three.\u00a0 I’m out.\u00a0 Your mileage may vary but Extended Family<\/em> is not for me.<\/p>\n

Extended Family: Season 1 <\/strong><\/em>(2023) earns 1 of 5 stars.<\/span><\/p>\n
