The man with the rifle drove north.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

After a mass murderer kills five people with just six shots the police get lucky.\u00a0 Evidence accidentally left behind leads to the killer’s capture before the day is done.<\/p>\n

James Barr fits the profile.\u00a0 He’s an ex-military sniper.\u00a0 He’s had a difficult time adjusting to civilian life.\u00a0 The police are giving high-fives all around.\u00a0 This will be an open and shut case.\u00a0 James Barr says two things: he’s innocent and he will only speak to Jack Reacher.<\/p>\n

Reacher is a former military cop.\u00a0 Now he’s a civilian.\u00a0 Reacher sees a news report about the shooting.\u00a0 He remembers James Barr well.\u00a0 Reacher brought Barr up on charges for a killing spree in Kuwait.\u00a0 Despite overwhelming evidence, Barr was never charged.\u00a0 That never sat well with Reacher. Now he plans to inform prosecutors of Barr’s past.<\/p>\n

Reacher is shocked Barr requested to see him.\u00a0 They hate each other.\u00a0 When Reacher asks to speak to Barr, he discovers that Barr was badly beaten while in custody.\u00a0 Making things worse Barr cannot remember much about the day of the shooting.\u00a0 Barr knows Reacher’s an exceptional investigator who won’t rest until the truth is revealed.\u00a0 Reacher doubts Barr’s innocence, but decides to look at the evidence.<\/p>\n

The shots came from just 35 yards out.\u00a0 Yet, there were six shots and only five kills.\u00a0 Barr wouldn’t have missed at that range.\u00a0 Why was one shot a miss?\u00a0 Then there’s the evidence that led to Barr.\u00a0 He wouldn’t have left behind a shell casing with a fingerprint.\u00a0 And what killer would take the time to put a quarter (with another fingerprint) in the parking meter where he was shooting from?\u00a0 Things weren’t adding up.<\/p>\n

As Reacher digs deeper, he becomes the next target.<\/p>\n
