Waldo doesn&#8217;t care for Laura&#8217;s latest boyfriend who is a scam artist.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shelby Carpenter (Price) is Laura&#8217;s boyfriend.\u00a0 She was considering marriage to Shelby despite his past.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ann Treadwell (Anderson) is a rich society dame.\u00a0 Ann has repeatedly given Shelby money and is in love with him.<\/li>\n<li>Bessie (Adams) is Laura&#8217;s housekeeper.\u00a0 She is totally devoted to Laura.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As McPherson learns more about Laura, her beauty and exceptional personality, he becomes infatuated with her.<\/p>\n<p>Then something totally unexpected happens.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Thoughts (beware of spoilers)\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Laura was nominated for five Academy Awards and won one&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1945 <em>Nominee for Best Actor in a Supporting Role:<\/em> <strong>Clifton Webb<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>1945 <em>Nominee for Best Director:<\/em> <strong>Otto Preminger<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>1945 <em>Nominee for Best Writing, Screenplay:<\/em><strong> Jay Dratler, Samuel Hoffenstein, Elizabeth Reinhardt<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">1945 <em>Nominee for Best Art Direction-Interior Decoration, Black-and-White:<\/em> <strong>Lyle R. Wheeler, Leland Fuller, Thomas Little<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>1945 <em>Winner Best Cinematography, Black-and-White:<\/em><strong> Joseph LaShelle<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Vincent Price considered <em>Laura<\/em> the best film he was ever in.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Clifton Webb had a career in silent films.\u00a0 He then became a theater actor and hadn&#8217;t appeared on screen in 15 years.\u00a0 Otto Preminger wanted him for the role of Waldo. \u00a0Studio head Darryl F. Zanuck was against the casting because Webb was a homosexual.\u00a0 Preminger persisted.\u00a0 Zanuck said to give Webb a screen test.\u00a0 Webb said, &#8220;If Zanuck wants to see me act, he can come to the theater.&#8221;\u00a0 Preminger filmed Webb in a stage performance.\u00a0 When Zanuck saw this &#8220;screen test&#8221; he was upset with how Preminger got the footage, but agreed to the casting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Otto Preminger put together <em>Laura <\/em>as a project for him to produce and direct.\u00a0 However when Darryl Zanuck returned from the service to head the studio, he nixed this.\u00a0 Zanuck had problems with Preminger in the past.
