One vampire bites a human and you have two blood suckers. Two turn others and now there are four.\u00a0 As the number of vampires grow, only a few people realize (believe) what is happening.\u00a0 Ben Mears (Soul), his new girlfriend Susan (Bedelia), aging school teacher Jason Bruke (Ayers) and young Mark Petrie (Kerwin).<\/p>\n
What chance do they have against the living dead?<\/p>\n

Salem’s Lot<\/em> was originally developed as a feature film with George “Night of the Living Dead”<\/em> Romero set to direct.\u00a0 When Dracula<\/em> (1979) and Nosferatu the Vampyre<\/em> (1979) were announced, Warner Bros. decided to make Salem’s Lot<\/em> as a two episode mini-series.\u00a0 Romero then dropped out.<\/p>\nTobe Hooper came on board as a director.\u00a0 He realized as a tv project, he would be severely limited to the amount of blood\/gore.\u00a0 He therefore focused on creating atmosphere and tension.\u00a0 Salem’s Lot<\/em> is better for it. (As it turned out Salem’s Lot<\/em> was released theatrically in Europe with a slightly different cut.)<\/p>\nOn of the eeriest scenes is Ralphie Glick floating outside a second story window.\u00a0 Ralphie scratches the glass to awaken his sleeping brother.\u00a0 Part of the scene was filmed in reverse making it even more surreal.<\/p>\n
Reggie Nalder played the main vampire Barlow.\u00a0 It’s hard to believe that he has less than 90 seconds of screen time!\u00a0 Believe it or not, this works as it makes each appearance more frightening.\u00a0 Nalder expressed disappointment that additional filmed scenes didn’t make the final cut.\u00a0 He also said that the contact lenses and heavy make-up he had to wear was very uncomfortable.<\/p>\n
Bonnie Bedelia and Julie Cobb really shine.<\/p>\n
I remember the anticipation leading up to the original television showing.\u00a0 It was an event.\u00a0 This was in the days when you had to be in front of the tv to see the show.\u00a0 My date (and later my wife) and I made a point to be home both nights.\u00a0 We weren’t disappointed.<\/p>\n
