The Plot…<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The year is 1888.\u00a0 Katie Elder’s four grown sons have come home for her funeral.\u00a0 Home is the small frontier town of Clearwater.\u00a0 John (Wayne), the oldest, is an infamous gunfighter. Tom (Martin) is a professional gambler who drifts from town to town.\u00a0 Matt (Hollimann) is a store owner.\u00a0 Bud (Anderson) just graduated high school.<\/p>\n

The three oldest brothers had left years ago.\u00a0 They had been sending their mom money since dad died six months ago.\u00a0 They were unaware that their father had been murdered.\u00a0 Or that their mom had the family ranch stolen from her.<\/p>\n

But they know now.\u00a0 And they’re going to right those wrongs.<\/p>\n

Thoughts (beware of spoilers)\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

It has always bugged me that Katie Elder had four sons that ranged in age from about 60 to 17. How young was she when she had her first child?\u00a0 Because her eldest son was about 40 years older than the youngest!?! (The film’s conceit was that her eldest son was in his late 30’s.\u00a0 John Wayne was in his late 50s when he played the part.)<\/p>\n

The Sons of Katie Elder<\/em> was John Wayne’s first film after surgery for lung cancer.\u00a0 He had the cancer and two ribs removed just four months earlier.\u00a0 The production was initially set to film in October of 1964, but was postponed until January 1965!<\/p>\n

The hearse used to transport Katie Elder now resides in front of the Haunted Mansion at Walt Disney World.<\/p>\n

Tommy (Old Yeller)<\/em>\u00a0Kirk was originally cast as the youngest brother.\u00a0 After Kirk was arrested for possession of marijuana the role was recast.<\/p>\n

Three actors played two roles in The Sons of Katie Elder.<\/em>\u00a0 Karl Swenson played both Doctor Isdell and the bartender.\u00a0\u00a0Jerry Gatlin is uncredited but played one of the Hasting’s gunmen and the railroad worker.\u00a0 Boyd ‘Red’ Morgan, also uncredited played a member of the posse and the blacksmith.<\/p>\n

Doc Holliday’s woman known as Big Nose Kate<\/em> sometimes went under the alias Kate Elder.\u00a0 Her real name was\u00a0Mary Katherine Horony Cummings.<\/p>\n
