The Plot…<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

1942.\u00a0 World War II rages.\u00a0 Because Turkey is neutral, the United States, Russia and Germany have embassies trying to sway the country.\u00a0 Spies are everywhere.<\/p>\n

Joe Barton (Raft) is traveling by train in Turkey when he meets a pretty woman.\u00a0 Barton sees a man staring at the woman.\u00a0 He asks if she needs help.\u00a0 She asks Barton to hold some papers for her.\u00a0 They will meet at her hotel once they arrive at their destination.\u00a0 Barton agrees.<\/p>\n

Barton is followed to his hotel.\u00a0 In his room he is searched but the papers aren’t found.\u00a0 Later, after he’s made sure he wasn’t tailed, Barton heads to the hotel where the woman is staying.\u00a0 When he goes to her room, he discovers she’s been murdered.\u00a0 Barton hides when another man enters the room.\u00a0 As the man goes through the woman’s things, Barton escapes.\u00a0 He’s followed by the man who entered behind him.<\/p>\n

Barton realizes the papers are valuable.\u00a0 But to which country?\u00a0 Barton has been set-up as the woman’s murderer.\u00a0 The authorities, Russian and German spies want the information in Barton’s possession.<\/p>\n

Thoughts (beware of spoilers)\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the source novel, the character George Raft plays was a salesman.\u00a0 Raft demanded that his character be changed to an undercover FBI agent using the salesman job as a cover.<\/p>\n

The last scene in this film shows an airplane taking off.\u00a0 The scene was taken from Casablanca<\/em>.\u00a0 Interestingly enough, George Raft was offered the starring role in Casablanca<\/em>, but turned it down.\u00a0 It became one of Humphrey Bogart’s most popular roles and the film is considered a classic.<\/p>\n
