But that isn&#8217;t what the whole town whispered&#8230;nor the ugly name the husband gave it when he found out&#8230;too late!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The Plot&#8230;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mae Doyle (Stanwyck) left Monterey for a glamourous life.\u00a0 Now, ten years later she&#8217;s returned.\u00a0 The rich man she was seeing died.\u00a0 He left Mae some money, but the man&#8217;s wife and family took her to court.\u00a0 They won and Mae got nothing.\u00a0 Now she&#8217;s ten years older and back in the same small town she hoped to never see again.<\/p>\n<p>Mae moves into the family home now owned by her younger brother, Joe (Andes).\u00a0 Joe isn&#8217;t happy to see Mae back.\u00a0 Joe knows she&#8217;s a gold digger and is worried Mae will be a bad influence on his girl, Peggy (Monroe).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mae begins to date Joe&#8217;s boss, Jerry.\u00a0 Jerry owns a boat and makes a modest living leading a fishing crew.\u00a0 Jerry falls for Mae but thinks he&#8217;s not in her league.\u00a0 Mae hoped for a better life, but Jerry is the best she&#8217;ll find in this town.\u00a0 They continue to date with Jerry hoping to win her over.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jerry introduces Mae to his best friend, Earl (Ryan).\u00a0 Earl is rough around the edges, and like Mae had hoped for a better life than he has.\u00a0 Mae can&#8217;t stand Earl and the feeling is mutual.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jerry proposes to Mae.\u00a0 She warns him that she&#8217;s no good for him.\u00a0 Jerry doesn&#8217;t see it that way.\u00a0 Mae realizes that although Jerry isn&#8217;t her type of man, he could provide her with security.\u00a0 Mae agrees to marry Jerry, maybe she will come to love him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A year into the marriage and Jerry and Mae have a baby girl.\u00a0 Small time life isn&#8217;t what Mae wanted.\u00a0 And the way Earl is looking at her and talking to her.<\/p>\n<p>Mae knows it&#8217;s wrong and someone could end up dead, but&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Thoughts (beware of spoilers)\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Clash by Night<\/em> features one of Marilyn Monroe&#8217;s first starring roles.\u00a0 During filming, news of Monroe&#8217;s nude calendar photos became public knowledge.\u00a0 The news created quite a distraction for the film&#8217;s production.\u00a0 Barbara Stanwyck advised Marilyn to admit the truth and say that she posed for the photos when she was younger and needed the money.
