{"id":38941,"date":"2025-06-15T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-15T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=38941"},"modified":"2025-06-12T22:04:38","modified_gmt":"2025-06-13T02:04:38","slug":"38941","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=38941","title":{"rendered":"THE TURNAROUND by George Pelecanos \/ Z-View"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4h2HVMr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2025\/z061525zview_turnaround_pelecanos.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"761\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4e4BWGU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">THE TURNAROUND<\/a> by George Pelecanos<\/p>\n<p>First sentence&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He called the place Pappas and Sons Coffee Shop.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>The Overview:\u00a0 Beware of Spoilers\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">1972.\u00a0 When Alex&#8217;s plans to hangout with his girlfriend get cancelled, he decides to go riding with his buddies, Billy and Pete.\u00a0 Cruising with the guys and some beer isn&#8217;t as fun as he&#8217;d have had with Karen, but it&#8217;s something to do.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As they drive aimlessly, trading jokes and insults, the boys end up near Heathrow Heights.\u00a0 The black kids at their school were bussed in from Heathrow.\u00a0 Billy, behind the wheel, starts talking about driving through Heathrow Heights.\u00a0 Alex is ready to go home, but to say so now would mark him as &#8220;chicken&#8221;.\u00a0 Instead Alex asks, &#8220;What are we gonna do when we get in there?&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;Raise a little hell&#8221; is the answer.\u00a0 Alex doesn&#8217;t want to, but keeps quiet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When they see a few black kids near the street, Billy slows the car.\u00a0 Pete hits one with a Hostess pie as he yells racial slurs.\u00a0 Billy guns the car.\u00a0 He thinks a turnaround is straight ahead.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a dead end.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the boys jumps out of the car and runs.\u00a0 The other two see the black kids angry and coming toward them fast.\u00a0 Each are punched.\u00a0 Then a shot rings out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thirty-five years later.\u00a0 Everyone involved in the incident has been affected.\u00a0 One kid was killed.\u00a0 One kid sent to prison.\u00a0 Thirty-five years later and they&#8217;re no longer kids.\u00a0 One of the survivors contacts another he hasn&#8217;t seen since the incident.\u00a0 If they meet would it be for revenge or healing?\u00a0 Does it have anything to do with the boy, now a bitter man, that was sent to prison?\u00a0 Are they aware he&#8217;s now out?\u00a0 Do they even know that the ex-con plans on getting restitution, one way or another?<\/p>\n<p>George Pelecanos has written another winner.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Rating:<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/logo\/zview_b.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"100\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE TURNAROUND by George Pelecanos First sentence&#8230; He called the place Pappas and Sons Coffee Shop.
