The Plot…<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Rex and Saskia are young and in love.\u00a0 While on vacation in France, they stop at a busy gas station.\u00a0 They stretch their legs and take a break in a nearby grassy area.\u00a0 As Rex waits at the car, Saskia heads in to get drinks for the road.<\/p>\n

She never returns.<\/p>\n

When Rex realizes Saskia should have been back, he searches the gas station and surrounding area.\u00a0 Nobody saw anything.\u00a0 Rex goes to the police.\u00a0 Searches and appeals to the public turn up no clues.<\/p>\n

Rex is obsessed with finding Saskia.\u00a0 He makes sure posters with Saiska’s picture and information about her disappearance are always up.\u00a0 He follows up on even the smallest possibility.\u00a0 Rex realizes Saskia is probably not alive.\u00a0 Still, it torments Rex to not know what happened to her.<\/p>\n

Three years after her disappearance, Rex is contacted by Saiska’s kidnapper.\u00a0 He wants to meet.<\/p>\n

Thoughts (beware of spoilers)\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

Stanley Kubrick reportedly considered The Vanishing<\/em> the most terrifying film he’d ever seen.\u00a0 Entertainment Weekly listed The Vanishing<\/em>\u00a0 as one of the all-time scariest films ever made.\u00a0 The Vanishing<\/em> is a movie that doesn’t have jump scares.\u00a0 There is no unstoppable killer or traditional monsters.\u00a0 And that makes it even more frightening.<\/p>\n

The Vanishing<\/em> will stay with you.\u00a0 You’ll think about the movie long after you finish watching it. THAT ending.\u00a0 The killer alone practicing his moves.\u00a0 The fact that Rex gets his wish.<\/p>\n

The success of The Vanishing<\/em>, the Dutch film was optioned to be remade in the United States.\u00a0 George Sluizer, who co-wrote and directed the original, was brought on to direct the American remake.\u00a0 Jeff Bridges, Kiefer Sutherland, Nancy Travis and Sandra Bullock were brought on to star.\u00a0 The budget was set at $20 million dollars (over ten times the budget of the original).\u00a0 The ending was changed because “American audiences don’t like sad endings.”\u00a0 Change the ending and you’re making a totally different film.\u00a0 Why bother?\u00a0 Audiences and critics overwhelmingly prefer the original.<\/p>\n
