Maybe you even get close to the truth.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The Plot&#8230;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The year is 1937.\u00a0 It&#8217;s been a hot summer and Los Angeles is going through a terrible drought.\u00a0 The heat is putting folks on edge.\u00a0 Especially farmers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jake Gittes is a private detective.\u00a0 His bread and butter is getting the goods on cheating spouses. So when Evelyn Mulwray hires Jake to find out if her husband, Hollis, is cheating he does.\u00a0 Hollis is.\u00a0 Jake gives the photos to prove it to Mrs. Mulwray.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When the compromising photos of Hollis and a young woman (definitely not his wife) show up in the paper, the affair is made public.\u00a0 Jake is surprised the pictures were made public, since it wasn&#8217;t by him.\u00a0 Jake is even more surprised when the real Mrs. Mulwray shows up at his office threatening legal action.\u00a0 Jake was duped.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But why?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When Hollis Mulwray is found dead in an L.A. reservoir.\u00a0 Jake decides to investigate. That night he heads down to the reservoir.\u00a0 Suddenly water begins rushing through the basin.\u00a0 Jake makes it out only to be confronted by the Water Department Security Chief Claude Mulvihill and a short thug. Mulvihill warns Jake to stop asking questions.\u00a0 The little gangster pulls a knife.\u00a0 He asks Jake if he understands what happens to people who stick their nose where it doesn&#8217;t belong.\u00a0 He then shows him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jake is even more determined to find answers.\u00a0 Why was he set up?\u00a0 Why was Hollis Mullwray killed?\u00a0 Who killed him? Your salary is your motivation!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ali McGraw was originally scheduled to play Evelyn Mulwray.\u00a0 She lost the role when she left her husband for Steve McQueen.\u00a0 McGraw&#8217;s husband was <em>Chinatown<\/em>&#8216;s producer, Robert Evans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Phillip Lambro wrote the film&#8217;s music score.\u00a0 After a test screening, Robert Evans decided a new score was needed.
