Fess Parker<\/strong>, best known for playing Davy Crockett<\/strong> in the 50’s<\/strong> and Daniel Boone<\/strong> in the 60’s<\/strong> died today at age 85<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Parker<\/strong> first gained fame playing Davy Crockett <\/strong>for Disney<\/strong>.\u00a0 Although he’d played supporting characters [many uncredited] prior to getting the starring role as Crockett<\/strong>, it was almost a fluke that he ended up in the lead.\u00a0 Disney<\/strong> execs were screening “Them!” <\/strong><\/em>to get a look at James Arness<\/strong>, who was being considered for the role of Davy Crockett<\/strong>, but they were so impressed with Fess Parker’s<\/strong> turn in a bit part that he ended up with the role that was make him known to millions.<\/p>\n

After his run as Davy Crockett<\/strong>, Fess Parker<\/strong> appeared in several movies [perhaps the most famous being Old Yeller<\/em> and guest appearances on tv<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 In 1964<\/strong>, he again put on a coonskin cap and hit the big time.\u00a0 Daniel Boone<\/strong> ran for 159<\/strong> episodes from 1964<\/strong> to 1970<\/strong>.\u00a0 Not long after, Mr. Parker<\/strong> left show business to concentrate on real estate, and a winery<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

I was a fan of the Daniel Boone<\/strong><\/em> series as a kid and spent many hours playing “Daniel Boone”<\/strong> with my friends.\u00a0 I also had the Daniel Boone<\/strong> playset as a kid and spent even more hours playing with it.\u00a0 I can still remember getting to see Old Yeller<\/strong><\/em> when it was re-released in the 60’s<\/strong>.\u00a0 And of course watching Mr. Parker<\/strong> many, many times in his small but important role in the classic Them!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Mr. Parker<\/strong> is survived by his wife of fifty years, a son and daughter and many grandchildren.\u00a0 My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and fans.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
