Last night UFC 117 <\/strong>was held and for the first time in months, I didn’t get a chance to post my pre-fight predictions.\u00a0 Of course as luck would have it, I went 5-0<\/strong> on the night but since I didn’t get up my picks pre-fight, you’ll just have to trust me.\u00a0 You do trust me, right?<\/p>\n

Roy “Big Country” Nelson Vs. Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Prefight Prediction: <\/strong>I thought that Dos Santos<\/strong> would win via TKO<\/strong> in the first or second.\u00a0 Everyone else watching with me picked Big Country<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Result:\u00a0 Junior Dos Santos<\/strong> won by unanimous decision<\/strong>.\u00a0 Big Country<\/strong> pressed the fight and had some great moments, but Dos Santos<\/strong> earned the victory.\u00a0 As far as everyone watching with me was concerned, it was a moral victory for Big Country<\/strong>… and I agree!<\/p>\n

Matt Hughes Vs. Ricardo “Cacharrao” Almeida <\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Prefight Prediction: Hughes<\/strong> via a hard fought and potentially close decision<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n


\nResult: Hughes<\/strong> won by chokeout<\/strong> at \t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t\t\t3:15 \t\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t\t\tin the 1st round<\/strong>.\u00a0 Hughes<\/strong> landed a solid punch that rocked Almeda<\/strong> then jumped on him and applied the choke.\u00a0 After that it was lights-out.<\/p>\n

Clay “The Carpenter” Guida Vs. Rafael Dos Anjos <\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Prefight Prediction: Guida<\/strong> by TKO<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Result:\u00a0 Guida<\/strong> won by tapout<\/strong> at \t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t\t\t1:51 \t\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t\t\tin the 3rd round<\/strong>.\u00a0 Post fight reports say that Dos Anjos<\/strong> fought with a broken jaw from round one.<\/p>\n

Jon Fitch Vs. Thiago “Pitbull” Alves <\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Prefight Prediction: Fitch<\/strong> by decision<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Postfight Result: Fitch <\/strong>won by unanimous decision<\/strong>.\u00a0 Alves<\/strong> had trouble making weight which I thought would add to Fitch’s advantage<\/strong>.\u00a0 At the post fight press conference Dana White<\/strong> said he believed Alves<\/strong> should move up a weight class for his future fights.\u00a0 I agree.<\/p>\n

Anderson “The Spider” Silva Vs. Chael Sonnen<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Prefight Prediction:<\/strong> Had I posted my fights on Friday<\/strong>, I would have went with Sonnen<\/strong>.\u00a0 When we made our picks right before the fights, I went with Silva<\/strong>.\u00a0 I wanted Sonnen<\/strong> to win, but I thought that Silva <\/strong>would find a way to victory.\u00a0 My thought was that Sonnen<\/strong> would press the fight and possibly score a takedown, but that Silva <\/strong>would get back to his feet and his superior stand-up would end an exciting fight fairly early.
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Result: Silva<\/strong> won by tapout<\/strong> to an arm bar at \t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t\t\t3:10 \t\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t\t\tin the 5th round<\/strong>.\u00a0 Up to that point Sonnen<\/strong> had owned Silva.<\/strong> He took Silva<\/strong> down at will.\u00a0 He pounded him relentlessly for 4 and 3\/5 rounds.\u00a0 And while it’s true that Silva<\/strong> landed a few good shots and elbows along the way, it was Sonnen’s fight throughout<\/strong>.\u00a0 Credit has to be given to Silva<\/strong> who never looked frustrated and, like a champion found a way to win.<\/p>\n

Final thoughts:<\/strong><\/p>\n

  • Roy<\/strong> “Big Country” <\/em>Nelson<\/strong> probably earned more respect and fans in losing to Dos Santos<\/strong> than he did in winning the last season of The Ultimate Fighter<\/strong><\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    • Matt Hughes<\/strong> picked up a $60,000 bonus<\/strong> for Submission of the Night Honors<\/strong> (as did Anderson Silva<\/strong>).\u00a0 My guess is the wins (because of what they meant to their careers) meant more to both Hughes<\/strong> and Silva <\/strong>than the money.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • Clay Guida <\/strong>got more interest from the ladies watching than any other fighter.\u00a0 Scary, huh?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        • Anderson Silva<\/strong> and Chael Sonnen<\/strong> each earned $60, 000 bonuses<\/strong> for Fight of the Night<\/strong>.\u00a0 Don’t you imagine Sonnen <\/strong>would give up the 60K <\/strong>for a chance to redo the last few seconds of the fight?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
