As I write this I’m a little less than half way through William Shatner’s<\/strong><\/a> autobiography<\/strong>, Up Till Now<\/strong><\/a> and I’m already hating that it will end.\u00a0 Shatner’s<\/strong> stories, observations and asides are entertaining and written as if he was chatting with the reader over a McDonald’s Mocca Frappe<\/strong>.\u00a0 [Stay thirsty, my friends!]<\/p>\n Growing up, I was a HUGE Star Trek<\/strong><\/em> fan [although Spock<\/strong> was my favorite character] and I did enjoy Shatner <\/strong>in Boston Legal<\/strong><\/em> and The Twilight Zone<\/strong><\/em> episodes [that he headlined], but I wasn’t a TJ Hooker<\/strong><\/em> fan.\u00a0 And except for the Star Trek<\/strong> <\/em>movies starring Shatner<\/strong> and the original crew, there are no other William Shatner<\/strong> films in my movie collection.\u00a0 That had led me to believe that I might enjoy only a small part of Shatner’s autobiography<\/strong>.\u00a0 Boy, was I wrong.\u00a0 Ever page has either made me smile or given me some interesting insight.\u00a0 And sometimes both.\u00a0 For example, Shatner<\/strong> discusses being flown to France <\/strong>with his co-stars for the premiere of an animated film…<\/p>\n In the animated film, Over the Hedge <\/strong><\/em>I played Ozzie the Opossum<\/strong>, whose primary survival technique is playing dead, but truly dramatically dead.\u00a0 Shatnerian<\/strong> playing dead.\u00a0 Jeffrey Katzenberg<\/strong>, the head of DreamWorks<\/strong>, sent the cast, including Bruce Willis<\/strong> and myself to the Cannes Film Festival<\/strong> for the premiere of the film.\u00a0 As we were walking up the red carpet, surrounded by photographers, we were introduced to the French actors<\/strong> who had played our characters in the French<\/strong> version.\u00a0 Wait a second, I wondered, we’re the stars of the film, right?\u00a0 I knew we were the stars, our names were in big letters on the lobby cards and credits.\u00a0 But as this is an animated film our faces weren’t on the screen, and now our voices were replaced by French<\/strong> actors.\u00a0 So we were the stars of a film in which we didn’t even appear.\u00a0 What were we doing there?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Think about it.\u00a0 Pay big bucks to an actor who will never appear on screen and then replace his voice too!
