{"id":5084,"date":"2010-12-27T12:57:55","date_gmt":"2010-12-27T16:57:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=5084"},"modified":"2010-12-27T12:57:55","modified_gmt":"2010-12-27T16:57:55","slug":"hero-dynamite-and-henchman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=5084","title":{"rendered":"Hero, Dynamite and Henchman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2010\/z12272010hero_hire.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"453\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the cover above to <strong>Luke Cage, Hero for Hire #1<\/strong>.\u00a0 I can remember buying the first issue off the stands [cover date <strong>June 1972<\/strong>].\u00a0 <strong>Lucas<\/strong> was sent to prison for a crime he didn&#8217;t commit.\u00a0 In an effort to get early release, <strong>Lucas<\/strong> agreed to an experimental treatment designed to boost a person&#8217;s immunity to illness.\u00a0 Instead it gave him <strong>super-strength<\/strong> and<strong> steel hard skin<\/strong>.\u00a0 <strong>Lucas<\/strong> used his new powers to escape prison and take on the identity of <strong>Luke Cage, Hero for Hire<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I loved the idea of a hero who took on cases like a private eye. \u00a0\u00a0 And although <strong>Cage<\/strong> was a <strong>&#8220;Hero for Hire&#8221; <\/strong>he often took on cases for no pay when the cause was right.\u00a0 I really got into the comic.\u00a0\u00a0 In &#8220;shop&#8221; class we had to create business cards, so while other kids were creating cards as lawyers, plumbers and the like, I created cards that read <strong>&#8220;Blackjack Joey, Hero for Hire.&#8221;<\/strong> I explained to the teacher that<strong> &#8220;Blackjack Joey&#8221; <\/strong>was my secret identity [taking the moniker of my favorite professional wrestler, <strong>Blackjack Mulligan<\/strong>, and combining it with my middle name<strong> Joseph<\/strong>].<\/p>\n<p>That was over <strong>38 years<\/strong> ago.\u00a0 So you can imagine my amusement when looking through the <strong>December<\/strong> issue of <strong>Previews<\/strong> to see <em>these<\/em> two comics coming out in the early months of <strong>2011<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2010\/z12272010black_dynamite.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"464\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the cover to <strong><em>Black Dynamite: Slave Island<\/em> <\/strong>coming from <strong>Ape Entertainment<\/strong>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a <strong>48 page full color graphic novel<\/strong> based on the <em><strong>&#8220;Black Dynamite&#8221;<\/strong><\/em> movie which starred <strong>Michael Jai White<\/strong>.\u00a0 <em><strong>Black Dynamite: Slave Island<\/strong><\/em> was written by <strong>Brian Ash <\/strong>with art by<strong> Jun Lofamia<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 The book is suggested for <strong>mature readers<\/strong> and will set you back<strong> $5.95<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2010\/z12272010henchman_hire.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"464\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Harry Walton: Henchman for Hire<\/strong><\/em> is a <strong>62 page full color graphic novel<\/strong> [$9.95] from <strong>Arcana Studio<\/strong>.\u00a0 Written by <strong>Zak Sherman<\/strong> with art by <strong>Tom Martinek<\/strong> and<strong> Jason Worthington<\/strong>, it is the story of a &#8220;disenfranchised ex-super-hero sidekick&#8221;
